Announcements Director's Message from Helene M. Langevin, M.D. January 21, 2022 January usually brings a feeling of fresh beginnings and diving into exciting new chapters. But with 2022 marked by a resurgence of COVID-19, I know many people have felt a painful dj vu, especially the health care workers who are on the frontlines of the latest wave. | Resources for Researchers BRAIN Initiative: Development of Novel Tools to Probe Cell-Specific and Circuit-Specific Processes in Human and Non-Human Primate Brain (UG3/UH3 Clinical Trial Optional) Notice of Technical Assistance Webinar for RFA-AR-22-009, HEAL Initiative: Restoring Joint Health and Function to Reduce Pain Consortium (RE-JOIN) HEAL Initiative: Secondary Analysis and Integration of Existing Data Related to Acute and Chronic Pain Development or Management in Humans (R21 Clinical Trials Not Allowed) Emergency Award HEAL Initiative: Optimizing Existing Evidence-Based Multi-Component Service Delivery Interventions for People with Opioid Use Disorder, Co-Occurring Conditions, and/or Suicide Risk (R01 Clinical Trials Optional) Emergency Award HEAL Initiative: Developing and Optimizing Multi-Component Service Delivery Interventions for People with Opioid Use Disorder, Co-Occurring Conditions, and/or Suicide Risk (R01 Clinical Trials Optional) BRAIN Initiative: Standards to Define Experiments Related to the BRAIN Initiative (R01 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) Emergency Awards: HEAL Initiative- New Innovator Award (DP2 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) HEAL Initiative: Advancing Health Equity in Pain and Comorbidities (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Required) Notice of Information on Cloud Computing and High-Throughput Computing Resources for Collaborative Research in Computational Neuroscience (CRCNS) Grantees Emergency Awards: HEAL Initiative-Limited Competition: HEAL Initiative Resource Centers for the Pain Management Effectiveness Research Network (ERN) (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed) Notice of Participation of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) in RFA-EY-21-003, "BRAIN Initiative-Related Research Education: Short Courses (R25 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)" Highlighted Funding Opportunities Music and Health: Understanding And Developing Music Medicine (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) NCCIH is interested in supporting research aimed at understanding the mechanisms by which music-based interventions impact resilience, health promotion, disease prevention, and symptom management in high-priority topics such as pain, stress-related disorders, and sleep disorders. NCCIH is also interested in the mechanisms by which music-based intervention could be used to address opioid misuse and enhancement of well-being. In addition to basic animal model work, NCCIH supports mechanistic clinical trials under this FOA, as well as technological or methodological development supporting mechanistic understanding of music-based interventions. NIH launches $9.8 million Neuromod Prize To Accelerate the Development of Targeted Neuromodulation Therapies The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has launched the Neuromod Prize, a $9.8 million competition to accelerate the development of targeted neuromodulation therapies. The first phase of the competition calls on scientists, engineers, and clinicians to submit novel concepts and plans for development. This competition is seeking groundbreaking uses of peripheral nerve stimulation that can independently regulate two or more desired autonomic functions without unintended effects on non-target organs. Concept papers are due by April 28, and up to eight winners will receive a share of the up to $800,000 Phase 1 prize pool. Diversity Resources HEAL Initiative: Advancing Health Equity in Pain and Comorbidities (R61/R33 Clinical Trial Required) The purpose of this FOA is to solicit applications to develop, test, and implement novel, culturally-appropriate pain interventions and/or adapt, test and evaluate efficacy and effectiveness of existing pain interventions, in populations that disproportionately experience negative health outcomes. Desired outcomes of these interventions include reduction of pain and pain-related symptoms, and improvement in overall health outcomes, including function and quality of life. Interventions that target populations that experience health disparities with chronic pain in addition to at least one comorbid condition (OUD, mental health disorders and/or chronic health conditions) are of the highest priority. Letters of Intent (strongly encouraged) are due Feb 22, 2022. The application due date is March 23, 2022. Upcoming Events February 2, 2022
