The Advocate's Top Headlines

with Matthew Albright | Assistant metro editor

Good morning. Our reporters were busy yesterday bringing you Baton Rouge's biggest stories. Here are some of the top ones:

More details on trooper's death

Louisiana State Police gave new information Monday on the death of Master Trooper Adam Gaudet, who they say was ambushed in his squad car during a series of deadly shootings on Saturday.

Officials confirmed that Gaudet's death wasn't discovered until some 15 hours after he was shot. They said that's because the agency went on radio silence to help with the hunt for the man accused of killing him and another person.

That suspect, who's also accused of wounding three other people, was released from the hospital Monday — and police took him to jail with Gaudet's handcuffs.

Oil prices way up

Rising oil prices are always a mixed bag for Louisiana. On the one hand, it can make gas more expensive, but on the other it can lead to more jobs in our energy-heavy economy.

Oil prices have reached their highest level since 2014. The big question is: Are they going to stay there?

This story reads the economic tea leaves and explains what it might mean for our state.

What to do about homelessness, panhandling

Baton Rouge leaders are sending out teams to panhandling hotspots and homeless encampments, trying to connect people with help. The idea is if they can treat mental health issues, addiction and other problems, they can get people off the street.

This story looks at the areas the "HOT Teams" will be focusing on, how they hope to make a difference, and what longtime advocates think of the plan.
