Announcements Director's Message from Helene M. Langevin, M.D. April 27, 2023
Dr. Griffin P. Rodgers, director of theNational Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, co-authored this months message with Dr. Helene M. Langevin, director of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health. Annual health observances, like American Heart Month in February, Pain Awareness Month in September, or Diabetes Awareness Month in November, are important opportunities to recognize the burden of specific diseases and conditions. Theyre also key in raising awareness of what individuals can do to positively impact their health. As we close out Aprils Stress Awareness Month, its important to recognize how addressing stress can impact the numerous other conditions that we recognize throughout the year. | May 3, 2023 Emmeline Edwards, Ph.D., NCCIH Division of Extramural Research Director Coryse St. Hillaire-Clarke, Ph.D. National Institute on Aging Program Director The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) and National Institute on Aging (NIA) are delighted to announce a new web-based resource, theNational Institutes of Health (NIH) Music-Based Intervention Toolkit. The online Toolkit was adapted from a paper published in the journalNeurologyon May 1, 2023, and will help researchers and health professionals interested in exploring music interventions for brain disorders of aging. Increasing evidence suggests that music-based interventions (MBIs) may be helpful for health conditions that occur during childhood, adulthood, or aging. However, because much of the research on MBIs is preliminary, few definite conclusions about their effects have been reached. | Martina Schmidt, Ph.D. May 1, 2023 I hope you can join us virtually onFriday, May 12, 2023,for the open session of the next meeting of the National Advisory Council on Complementary and Integrative Health (NACCIH). The open session will be livestreamed fromnoon to 3:30 p.m. ETonNIH VideoCast, and the recorded video will be made available at the same site several days later. Registration is not necessary, and everyone is welcome to attend online. | April 2023 Issue of Clinical Digest Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is challenging to study because of its varied, nonspecific symptoms, episodic nature, and the lack of confirmatory diagnostic testing. Although there is emerging evidence suggesting that some complementary health practices may be used for treating IBS, most of the studies have methodological flaws. Systematic reviews evaluating complementary modalities for IBS symptoms have concluded that few large, well-designed studies exist, and further research is required to determine whether complementary or integrative health practices are effective for treating IBS. |

Responses must be submitted by June 30, 2023, using the online response form. Food is Medicine is an umbrella term for a variety of activities and services that respond to the critical link between nutrition and health. Examples include medically tailored meals, medically tailored and healthy food packages or groceries, nutritious food referrals or vouchers, prescriptions for nutritious groceries or produce, and culinary medicine and teaching kitchen programs. The RFI asks for input on research, provision of services and activities, community outreach and engagement, education and training, and coverage for services. The responses to this RFI will help inform research planning efforts and strategies for implementing Food is Medicine activities at NIH and other agencies. Upcoming Events May 12, 2023; Virtual The next Advisory Council meeting will take place on May 12, 2023. The Open Session will be available for viewing via NIH Videocast. View the agenda. May 25, 2023, 12:00 p.m.-1:15 p.m. ET; Virtual How can we promote well-being in young people and prevent problems before they begin? Its a crucial and timely question, and it has spurred study and discovery of risks to and protective factors for young peoples development. This area of research has also led to tested, effective preventive interventions showing better outcomes that in some cases have lasted for decades and across generations. In her talk, Dr. Margaret Kuklinski will trace the evolution of prevention science and share the latest findings from longitudinal intervention studies based on the Social Development Strategy. Examples include Guiding Good Choices, a program for parents and caregivers to help them support positive development and the prevention of behavioral problems in their children, and Communities That Care, a prevention system. Dr. Kuklinski will also describe what is needed to increase the equitable reach and impact of effective health promotion and prevention approaches.
