National Broadband Network provider NBN Co has killed off plans to offer a 100/40Mbps fixed-wireless service, with NBN Co chief Bill Morrow confirming the decision in a Senate Estimates committee hearing.

Some websites have shut down and others are either blocking users from Europe or trying to obtain consent before allowing them in as the General Data Protection Regulation comes into force in the 28 states of the European Union.

Amazon Echo smart assistants have received a great deal of puff in the media but the devices may be surreptitiously recording conversations and sending them to random people in the address book of a user, as was demonstrated in a US case this week.

Russian authorities have arrested a 32-year-old man who is accused of being the leader of a group that was stealing funds from Russian banks by using a trojan that runs on the Android mobile operating system.

American technology companies may be required by law to inform the government if they permit countries seen as enemies — China and Russia, for example — access to the source code of applications that are being used by the US military.

Networking equipment maker Netgear has advised users of its routers to ensure they are running the latest firmware in the wake of reports that malware known as VPNFilter has infected nearly 500,000 devices in 54 countries.
