I’ve bored you before talking about my kids, so in the spirit of keeping you up to date on only the most important things at Independence, my son Chance turned 15 years old yesterday.
For a kid that would have died at about 2 months old without state-of-the-art heart surgery, that’s a pretty damn big deal.
Chance has Down Syndrome, causing a host of physical and mental limitations. But those mental ‘limitations” are often just the opposite. I feel almost guilty getting so much joy from this kid. At 15, he still believes Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and superheroes are real, AND he wants to hang out with me. All those great things your kids grew out of way too fast, I get to enjoy over and over.
Those of you with regular teenagers, eat your hearts out.
I’m grateful we have a healthcare industry that still invests in research and innovation so my kid can live and thrive. There is no better time and no better country for Chance to have the best chance for a long and healthy life. We’re not Cuba yet, and Colorado isn’t California yet.
