Dear Friend, Last month, we opened a call for stories about the mother figures in your lives and how they read The Forward. We received an overwhelming number of responses and will be sharing many of them on Mother’s Day. We're so happy to remember along with you, that special job you had, picking the paper up with her.
For some of you, that began even before you were born: "Despite being pregnant with me, 66 years ago my mother would do a daily dash to meet the NYC train delivering the Forverts to our hometown of Rochester." [Howard Dietch] Others had very special delivery services mailing the paper to them: “We lived outside of Pittsburgh, and my zaide, Herbert Kohn, lived in Philadelphia. He mailed my mom Annette the Forward. My sisters and I would sit on the floor around our Mom while she read the Forward to us, and translated the Yiddish. We especially loved the Bintel Brief. “ [Karen Shore] And so many of you reminded us of the mekhaye it was for mom to read it: "The one daily ritual that could not be interrupted was her sitting down with coffee and reading The Forward. Done reading it, the paper would be carefully folded and passed on to her twin sister, Molly." [Sheila B. Amdur] We know that The Forward is a family value for many of our readers. Stories like these remind us that over the last 123 years The Forward has been part of how the mother figures in our lives stay in-the-know about news from a Jewish perspective, and pass that understanding down to the next generation.
Generation Forward is our year-long campaign to make sure The Forward is here for 123 years more. If your mother read The Forward or taught you the importance of fiercely independent Jewish news, make a donation to support The Forward today.
Thank you, The Forward team |
