My Favorite Rocket Kits (Part I) |
| Good morning! People often ask me to choose my favorite kit, and I often say: “The next one”. Personally, I enjoy variety, and I’m always up for the next challenge because I want to expand my skills and find more ways to enjoy rocketry. But there are a few rockets that I seem to bring out to the launch range more than others, and today I wanted to share Part I in our multi-part series taking a deeper look at some of them. As always, if you have any questions or comments, I’d love to hear from you! |

| I’ve always had a fascination with the Army missile since the first time I saw a picture of it when I was a kid in the 1970’s. It has a look that is vastly different from the traditional rocket, reminding me more of a battlefield tank than a rocket. Beyond that, as a subject for a rocket, it has a complexity that always seemed just beyond the capabilities of my skills. So when we decided to make this into a kit, we wanted to simplify the rocket to make it easier to build and fly, so that us mortals can accomplish the objective. It still has some challenge to it, no doubt, but in kit form, those complexities are managed and achievable. |
| I really enjoyed the time building this rocket, because it has an “engineered” feel to it in the way the parts go together. I found it to be far more relaxing than I had anticipated based on how complex the rocket first appears when you see a photo of it. And finally, setting up the actual launch with the four motors in the booster stage, and the electronically ignited upper stage motor seemed a lot more exciting than a traditional rocket. Again, I’d term it as "manageable complexity.” It does have some challenge to it, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility for the rocketeer that has flown dozens of other rockets. The process definitely gives the launch an extra amount of anticipation, but I think that makes the exhilaration of seeing it fly so much more than other rockets. It is hard to describe the elation and satisfaction that comes from a successful flight. I find I want to fly it at every launch, but then launching other rockets would feel like a let-down.
