Telkom is a perfect example of how difficult it is to transition from old tech to new tech, with that group suffering plenty of pain along the way. Of course, the goal is to avoid a Kodak moment, which would be a guarantee if the hard decisions around a transition aren't made. At MultiChoice, the focus is on growth in Africa and streaming services alongside the traditional business. Sports betting is also in play, with buzzwords like FinTech now also making an appearance. Inexplicably, DSTV Fibre is also a possibility. That's a lot of distraction for a management team who should be doing the one thing that they refuse to do: introducing a SuperSport bouquet. Sigh. In addition to lots of details from the MultiChoice investor day, Ghost Bites features earnings from Alexander Forbes, Bytes, Coronation, Datatec, HCI, Indluplace and Zeda. It's a mixed bag, with some really good stuff in there and the unfortunate adoption of "adjusted EBITDA" (swear words for me) in one of those companies. The new range for the rand seems to be stickingTreasuryONE notes that the rand seems to be stuck in a new range, moving from the record level of R19.52 down to R19.20 towards the end of the trading session. It's a big week, with FOMC minutes out later today in the US and the local Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decision coming tomorrow. Look away now if you bought a home recently: the local rate hike is expected to be 50 basis points, with likelihood of a hawkish tone regarding further hikes. To get more information on the rand, watch TreasuryONE's weekly market review here (under 5 minutes) or settle in for the recording of the recent TreasuryONE webinar that I co-hosted with Wichard Cilliers. You' ll need 43 minutes for that one and possibly a strong stomach, but you'll learn a great deal. Good luck out there today! |
