BY DOUG GRAHAM | Staff writer Attorneys for some of the youth being held in a temporary facility on the grounds of Angola, the maximum-security adult prison in West Feliciana, have filed an emergency motion seeking to remove them from the prison. The lawyers say their clients have been confined in sleeping quarters without air conditioning, held in extended isolation and forced to shower while shackled and handcuffed. The motion comes almost a year to the day after the governor announced the controversial Angola plan. The Legislature struck down Gov. John Bel Edwards' veto of a ban on youth access to gender-affirming health care, but Republicans also failed to overturn Edwards on 24 other vetoes. The special veto override session — the third of its kind in Louisiana’s history — ended after one day with just a single veto overridden. The ban aligns Louisiana with a growing list of states that have restricted medical treatment for transgender people.
