Morning Briefing

FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2025

In today's newsletter, resident dies of rabies after receiving organ transplant, Michigan's weekend weather and Tigers suffer Opening Day loss.

March Madness continues tonight

Michigan State and Michigan are both in the Sweet 16 with their locker rooms only 54 steps apart inside State Farm Arena. If both win tonight in South Region semifinals, that will lead to a third matchup of the season Sunday and a first between the bitter rivals in the NCAA Tournament. Here is what’s being said nationally about both teams heading into tonight.

No. 2 seed Michigan State will face No. 6 Ole Miss on Friday (7:09 p.m., CBS) with No. 5 Michigan playing top overall seed Auburn in the late game. An Elite Eight rematch Sunday would pit the Big Ten regular-season champion Spartans against the conference tournament winning Wolverines.

I’ll be rooting for both teams tonight - a rivalry game that far into the tournament sounds exciting. Plus, things were left a bit unfinished last time these two met up, with a postgame scuffle occurring between some players.

The Guatemalan woman accidentally ended up in Canada when she selected the Costco in Windsor (rather than Detroit) in her GPS, Attorney Ruby Robinson said, identifying his client only a “Sarahi.” She crossed the Ambassador Bridge. When she attempted to reenter the United States via the bridge, she was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Missed chances cost Tigers in Opening Day loss to Dodgers

Play ball: Teoscar Hernandez crushed a three-run homer and the Detroit Tigers squandered scoring opportunities in a 5-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium. The Tigers (0-1) and Dodgers (3-0) play twice more in the season-opening weekend.

What happens if everything goes right (or wrong): With a tough April looming, the Tigers might want to keep that late-season magic in their back pocket as an insurance plan. The start of the season won’t be easy. Here are some optimistic, pessimistic and realistic predictions for 2025.

Let's talk about it: Gone is the fancy, cursive, orange and black Tigers sign above the large outfield scoreboard at Comerica Park, replaced with the words, Comerica Park. The Tigers organization has explained the reason for the change, saying the Tigers sign had run its course.

Posh: We got our first look at the new high-end Home Plate Club seats at Comerica Park which feature technology never used in professional sports before. There are now 340 of these cushioned seats behind home plate which are 21% wider than normal seats and come with more leg room.

The last coal-powered passenger steamer operating in the United States is celebrating 72 years of service on Lake Michigan.

Once used to transport railcars across the Great Lake, the historic S.S. Badger now operates an extension of U.S. 10 carrying passengers and vehicles between Ludington and Manitowoc, Wis.
