| | 📈 Unexpectedly Giant Sources of Revenue Inside Huge Public Companies | Trung Phan, who writes a weekly newsletter on culture and business, recently pulled some great stats from inside the biggest companies. | Here are some gigantic revenue sources within some of the giants: | Costco ($250 billion in 2024 sales) sold more than $9 billion of clothing. Amazon ($638 billion) made $56 billion from advertising. Walmart ($648 billion) sold more than 1.5 billion pounds of bananas, the retailer’s top-selling item. Apple ($395 billion) made about $40 billion in wearables like Apple Watches and AirPods, which is more than the total revenue of Visa ($36 billion). | Phan focused on Home Depot ($160 billion). Gardening accounted for 12.5% of Home Depot’s revenue. That’s more than appliances, lumber and paint, which you may associate with Home Depot before gardening. | Home Depot makes more money on gardening (plants, flowers, shrubs, soils, grills, patio furniture) than Hermes and Spotify make in yearly revenue ($16 billion each). | Phan cited this passage from a Wall Street Journal article: | “Home Depot runs 25 trial gardens in nine climate zones across the U.S. and studies them in the field under a variety of conditions. … For security purposes, some of those experimental gardens are hidden in cornfields or through backyard donkey corrals, protected on secret farms before the plants are selected and patented.” | | 📊 Stat of the Day | | | 💰️ Deal Alert: Today’s Top Deals | | | | | 🎙️ Podcast | Want to ask a question or share your opinion on the podcast?
