Morning Briefing

FRIDAY, MARCH 10, 2023

In today's newsletter, General Motors offers buyouts to majority of Michigan’s 35,000 salaried workers, Michigan basketball goes cold in critical Big Ten Tournament loss to Rutgers and Michigan is a top 7 state for camping, study says.

Packing up to live the RV life, today marks Jessica Shepherd's last day with MLive.

It's always bittersweet to lose a beloved colleague, so I'd like to dedicate this space to our proud Saginaw native and the great work she's done over the past 10 years here.

You may know her as the person who delivers the Morning Briefing newsletter to your inbox, or as the host of our Michigan News podcast. But let's go back to the beginning. She started off as reporter in Saginaw, then became a Life and Culture writer who produced countless stories highlighting all-things Michigan. One of her favorites? This article showcasing the most beautiful place in each of Michigan's 83 counties. More recently she served as our Lead Audio Producer, bringing the first episodic podcast in MLive history with Michigan Crime Stories.

She walks out of the office doors with a golden EMMY in each hand for her voiceover work on our Michigan bottle bill documentary and our documentary on the fight for environmental Justice in Michigan. Fabulous job, Jessica. We wish you the best on your next journey.

Worst times to be on the road during today’s snowstorm

Here's what to know: The first half of today will be the worst time to travel, since this is when the bulk of the snow will come down. Even during the afternoon, scattered snow showers will continue, so some reduced travel speeds may still be necessary as plow truck drivers work to clean up the roads.

A winter weather advisory is in effect for a little more than the southern half of Lower Michigan. The general idea of this snow system is a 3 inch to 6 inch accumulation. The winter weather advisory ends at 11 a.m. over the western half of the advisory area. The advisory ends over most of eastern Lower Michigan at 2 p.m. See our complete storm timeline here.

The state wants to hear from you: After two back-to-back winter storm knocked out electricity to hundreds of thousands, a state commission has scheduled three public forums to take comment on outages and public utilities.

General Motors offers buyouts to majority of Michigan’s 35,000 salaried workers

In the automotive world: General Motors offered all U.S. salaried employees with at least five years of service and all global executives with at least two years of service a voluntary separation package. Michigan makes up roughly 60% of GM’s overall salaried workforce.

Why? It's a part of GM’s plan to reach $2 billion in cost savings by the end of 2024. The buyouts come on the heels of an estimated 500 layoffs last month.

More in public interest : An estimated 10,000 tons of contaminated soil and 100,000 gallons of contaminated groundwater have been removed along U.S. 131 following a traffic crash weeks earlier.

School shootings were ‘toughest days’ of her tenure, Whitmer told CNN’s Chris Wallace

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer gave some noteworthy insight into the events that shaped her career as governor during a sit-down conversation with CNN host Chris Wallace as part of the University of Michigan’s “Democracy in Crisis: Views from the Press” series on Wednesday, March 8. Here’s some highlights of the discussion.

Going to her desk: Efforts to nix a requirement that Michigan’s third-graders be held back due to poor reading scores is one step closer to reality after House lawmakers gave it the green light in a near party-line vote.

Without public announcement, Michigan this month joined a tiny number of Democrat-controlled states that block TikTok from state-owned devices. There are exceptions, however, for law enforcement, cybersecurity and promotional purposes. That includes Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s popular TikTok account.
