Great Lakes fishing companies say Michigan DNR order ‘pretty much puts us out of business’ Do you know what the most commonly caught fish in commercial nets on the Great Lakes is? It's whitefish. Back when we were all eating in restaurants, it was one of Michigan's most favorite dishes. It's served at your local dive and your fancy pants joint. But right now there's an issue. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources has issued regulations for 2021 that impose more restrictions on commercial netting and recent studies are showing lake whitefish stocks have declined in northern Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. But according to some commercial fishing companies, the new state regulations are sinking their industry, are politically motivated, and not based on science. So what's the truth? How is it going to do? “We had 21,000 hit the website,” Belding said. “There’s definitely a demand.” As Michigan state and local public health officials push the importance of coronavirus immunizations, millions of Michiganders need no convincing. They’re anxious to get their vaccines, and frustrated at their inability to access them.
