University of Michigan plans to replace striking grad workers |
Strike saga: University of Michigan's Graduate Employees’ Organization, on strike since March 29, will be subject to replacement for the entire semester if the strike continues, according to Provost Laurie McCauley to an Aug. 7 email to union members. Education update: Two paths toward potentially removing Superintendent Jeanice Swift were approved by the Ann Arbor School Board Monday, with some trustees saying it’s time for a change while others suggested the actions felt “rushed.” In mid-Michigan: From a $31 million investment planned at Standish-based Vantage Plastics to a Saginaw County banquet center’s big plans for the Lumber Barons and Stables property in Bay City, here’s some recent mid-Michigan business news you might have missed. |

Michigan’s Great Lakes are surprisingly warmer than normal, especially the cold one- Lake Superior |
Hot water: While the air temperatures haven’t been much warmer than normal, Great Lakes waters around Michigan are generally warmer than the long-term average. Mark Torregrossa has the latest whole-lake average surface water temperatures for each Great Lake. Making room:U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractors began dredging sand from the Ludington and Pentwater harbors to deepen navigation channels for boats and shipping traffic. Speaking of lakes: Horseback riding along the Lake Michigan shoreline is set to return to the Silver Lake State Park in the fall. |

Longtime Tigers broadcaster Jim Price passes away at 81 |
In remembrance: Jim Price, a catcher on the Detroit Tigers’ 1968 championship who later spent decades working for the club in the broadcast booth, passed away Monday night. He was 81. The Lions will open this season as a divisional favorite for the first time since 1993. When they swing open the doors to Ford Field to kick off this highly anticipated season, they’ll do so with a brand-new statue celebrating Barry Sanders, the Hall of Fame running back who last led them to a divisional crown 30 years ago. Making a comeback : The Wolverines return several familiar faces along the defensive line this fall, a unit determined this offseason to improve its pass-rushing ability. And so far, players on the offense say, there has been a noticeable difference. |

Historic U.P. town hosting world’s first Pasty Olympics with pasty relay, ‘pasty pull’ |
"Eternal pasty glory": The annual summer festival, a celebration of the Upper Peninsula’s quintessential cultural cuisine held in Calumet, is hosting what is likely the world's first Pasty Olympics on Aug. 19. The zany new competitive event will have a bake-off, eating contest, car show and more. Speaking of unique Michigan foods, you don't have to decide between soda or ice cream to fix your sweet tooth at Dairy Whip, an ice cream shop in Redford. They're serving up ice cream made with Faygo Rock and Rye soda this week only. Walk it off: A secluded Lake Michigan beach is the perfect reward after hiking 1.5 miles on the Nordhouse Dunes Trail in Northern Michigan. |
