Michigan soldier killed in German forest during WWII accounted for 79 years later |
In remembrance : The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency announced this week that Army Tech Sgt. Leonard J. Dettloff, 26, of Detroit, was accounted for on May 5. Dettloff was killed in battle with German forces in the Hürtgen Forest on Nov. 10, 1944 during World War II. Speaking out: Former President Donald Trump spoke at Drake Enterprises in Clinton Township as the United Auto Workers strike continues against the Big Three. Also in politics: Child marriage is no longer legal in Michigan. On Tuesday, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the last of several bills meant to abolish the practice. |

Shining bright: The final supermoon of the year will light up our late September skies this week.The big, bright, full Harvest Moon will reach peak illumination at 5:57 ET on Friday, September 29, according to the astronomy site EarthSky. Garden talk: Hydrangeas seem to be so easy to get to bloom. But sometimes the blooming just doesn’t happen. Meteorologist and master gardener Mark Torregrossa explores a few reasons that might cause a lack of blooms. Looking at the numbers: The rainfall totals so far this year look especially erratic. Michigan State officially fires Mel Tucker for cause with nearly $80 million left on contract |
End of an era: Following a tumultuous 18-day ordeal involving allegations of sexual harassment, the university formally fired fourth-year coach Mel Tucker for cause on Wednesday. Michigan State has no intention of paying the roughly $80 million remaining in his contract. Climate change’s unseen toll: New study finds extreme heat linked to severe maternal morbidity |
In climate: The United States has seen increasingly worsening rates of maternal morbidity, with up to 60,000 women affected each year. A new study says we can add one more contributing factor to the list—extreme heat. Causing harm: There are two widely popular landscaping shrubs wreaking havoc on forests across Michigan and the Midwest: Japanese barberry and winged burning bush. While outside: A “far from ordinary” forest near Ludington boasts hiking trails, biking trails and two disc golf courses. |
