Recognizing Juneteenth across Michigan |
June 19, or the Juneteenth holiday, commemorates the 1865 emancipation of enslaved people in Texas. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation taking effect in 1863, it would be another two years before the news reached the Lone Star state. President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday in 2021 and the day is now widely celebrated with parades, festivals and other events. Here's a look at how cities around Michigan are celebrating the holiday. Flint's Juneteenth celebrations kick off Wednesday night with fireworks launching from Chevy Commons. In downtown Flint, The Last Poets group will perform as headliner of the Black Power Mixtape concert on Friday, June 21, at Comma Bookstore. Head to Washtenaw County to check out events like the University of Michigan's Juneteenth Symposium or learn about the history of Ann Arbor's Kerrytown at the North Star Lounge. Ypsilanti will also begin its three-day Juneteenth celebration on Friday. Muskegon will have its inaugural Juneteenth parade Wednesday morning followed by a day party. |

| Thousands of Michigan families with undocumented spouses to benefit from Biden’s new plan |
A new action announced Tuesday, June 18, by President Joe Biden provides new pathways to lawful permanent residence for some undocumented spouses and children. The process will allow undocumented immigrants who, as of Monday, have lived in the U.S. for 10 or more years and have been legally married to a U.S. citizen to remain with their families while they apply for permanent residency and eventually citizenship. According to immigration advocates, there are some 50,000 families in Michigan who have an undocumented family member that could, face deportation even after decades of living, working, paying taxes and building a family in the U.S. For Kalamazoo residents in poverty or with a criminal record, finding a career can be a struggle. Urban Alliance’s Momentum Urban Employment Initiative has returned to the city and offers life skills coaching and pre-employment training. |

Juneteenth is fee-free day at Michigan’s national parks, forests |
Holiday: Entrance fees will be waived at all National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service sites nationwide on June 19. In Michigan, that applies to visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Isle Royale National Park, and the Huron-Manistee, Hiawatha and Ottawa national forests. Up North: The 0.84-mile hike on the Arboretum Trail shows off a 1940s tree-growing experiment that includes more than 30 tree species from around the world. Located in the Manistee National Forest near Wellston in Manistee County, the looped trail starts and ends at its own trailhead. Great outdoors: Pollinators buzzing and fluttering along the Huron River in Ann Arbor have another place to stop now. DTE Energy workers planted a new pollinator garden at the power company’s Ann Arbor Service Center off Broadway Street next to the river on Monday, June 17. |

Tips for beating the heat, staying safe as temperatures soar |
Staying cool: Extreme heat is one of the leading causes of weather-related deaths in the United States, according to the National Weather Service. From staying indoors with air conditioning to reapplying sunscreen every two hours, here are a few tips on how to stay safe during the heat wave. Watch the pets: During hot weather, pets are just as vulnerable, if not more, than people are to heat-related illnesses. As our first heat wave of the season is underway, pet owners are encouraged to be aware of the heat-related safety hazards that pose risks to our four-legged friends and what they can do to prevent them. Be aware: With the heat wave on track to continue through Friday, hot cars pose a serious risk to children and pets. Temperatures can rise inside of a car up to nearly 110 degrees after only 10 minutes. This rises to 120 degrees after 20 minutes. |

Cedar Point animals escape from enclosures for second time in a week |
Running amok: For the second time in less than a week, animals were on the loose at Cedar Point over the weekend. On Saturday, several goats were spotted escaping from “The Barnyard” petting zoo area of the amusement park, according to ABC 5. The goat escape came just four days after camels were spotted running around the midway while guests were in the park. Bundle of joy: John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids has welcomed a snow leopard cub to its family. It's the first female cub born to Yuki, 3, and Mylo, 7 on Thursday, June 6. Yuki is a first-time mother and Zoo officials say she and her cub are doing well. No-kill shelter: Having outgrown its home on Peekstok Drive, Kalamazoo County’s Animal Rescue Project is preparing to open a new $2.1 million facility later this year. |

Dipped ice cream bar has plethora of over-the-top combinations to choose from |
Try something new: It’s one of the coolest new ice cream shops in Michigan, specializing in “over-the-top” dipped ice cream bars with a plethora of combinations to choose from. Bombshell Treat Bar in Berkley started out as an ice cream cart but is now a 2,200 square foot shop offering ice cream bars, soft serve, floats, hot pretzels, ice cream cakes and more. Tasty: Premium ice cream is when the dessert is made with a higher fat content, and that’s exactly what is being freshly churned at MaMa Lupo’s Homemade Ice Cream. MaMa Lupo’s, a Bay City tradition, is serving up generous serving sizes of over 20 homemade flavors. Sweet treats: Loaded shakes, bright colors and sweet treats are available at a new ice cream shop in Ypsilanti. Candy Coated Creamery always has 12 ice cream flavors available, but rotates between about 20 different flavors provided by either Ashby’s Ice Cream or Guernsey Farms Dairy. |
