Michigan’s ‘extremely lax’ mobile home law could get first overhaul since 1987 |
Regulations: A package of Senate Bills 486-490 could address skyrocketing rent increases, create a database of owners, require licenses and more by overhauling Michigan’s mobile home park law for the first time since 1987. The bills cleared a hurdle last month when they passed through committee with an 8-3 vote and are now headed to the Senate for a vote. More resources: Andy’s Place – an apartment community for those in need of substance abuse treatment and rehabilitation services in Jackson – received about $3 million in funding from the 2025 Michigan state budget. Michigan residents could receive six additional weeks of unemployment benefits under a new plan backed by Democrats. If enacted, the House bill would allow Michigan residents who file for unemployment benefits on or after Jan. 15, 2025, to receive up to 26 weeks of benefits, which is a month-and-a-half longer than the current 20-week maximum. |

Welcome to Michigan: First Lady Jill Biden arrived in Grand Rapids on Tuesday for several events this week, following the first presidential debate of the year. She will be in Middleville on Wednesday to support programs for child nutrition and military families. Biden will also fly out to Traverse City later on Wednesday for a community event. In support: Kristen McDonald Rivet has received what may be the biggest endorsement in the race to succeed Dan Kildee in Congress—the blessing of the incumbent from Flint Township who she hopes to replace. Also in politics: Democratic Rep. Elissa Slotkin is using her fundraising advantage in the race for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat to drop $8 million on advertising in the final weeks leading up to the general election. |

July might not be as steamy as earlier forecasts showed; Here’s why |
Updated forecast: Our first two weeks of July will have several weather systems that are expected to bring some rain and knock down the temperatures. July still looks to be a warmer than normal month, but not as hot as it looked in mid-June. This still means most days have high temperatures in the 80s, but not a prolonged period of 90 degrees or higher. Stay safe: Swimming at the beach is discouraged on Wednesday as dangerous Lake Michigan conditions are expected to continue throughout the day. Beaches from Holland and north will be impacted, with beaches located on the south side of piers particularly affected. This includes Grand Haven State Park and Pier Marquette State Park. Looking back: Two words that can be used to describe the month of June for much of the Lower Peninsula are warm and rainy. Now that we are in July, here's how June compared to the record books. |

‘Makes my skin crawl.’ Michigan marijuana customers may be inhaling harmful ingredients |
Michigan marijuana regulators know some vaping products contain a potentially harmful ingredient, but they don’t plan to test for it until October. That’s when new testing requirements will begin for medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil, an ingredient often derived from coconut or palm oil, according to the Cannabis Regulatory Agency What's wrong with it?: Studies have shown that inhaling MCT oil has the potential to cause respiratory problems, such as shortness of breath or lung inflammation. MCT oil is not allowed for use in Michigan vaping products, but it’s also not tested for, meaning unscrupulous producers are able to slip it in without being detected. Also in health: Federal officials estimate COVID-19 infections are on the rise in 43 states, including Michigan. The state's reported infections have remained consistent for at least two months. The week ending June 22 included 807 reported COVID-19 cases, which wasn’t far from the 813 cases reported the week ending April 20. |

$1.15B project to block invasive carp from ‘wreaking havoc’ on Great Lakes moves to construction |
Fishy: Michigan and Illinois have inked an agreement with the federal government to cosponsor construction of a long-planned project to block invasive carp species from moving into the Great Lakes, paving the way for the first phase of construction on the $1.15-billion effort. On the move: U.S. Forest Service officials said recently there has been increased black bear activity on Grand Island in Lake Superior, off the shore from Munising. As a result, wildlife scientists intend to trap some bears and remove them from the popular recreational island near Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Baby birds: Scientists at the University of Michigan Biological Station near Pellston are caring for newly hatched Great Lakes piping plovers as part of a captive rearing program. The effort is meant to help save the tiny Great Lakes shorebirds from extinction by boosting the species’ numbers by hatching birds from what would otherwise be lost eggs. |
