Home for the holidays✈️

Students traveling this holiday season can save money on airfare this week with the help of Amazon's latest flash sale. The online retail giant, in partnership with Student Universe, is rolling out 1,000 plane tickets until Thursday at a cost of $25 per flight.

To secure the deal, you must have a Amazon Prime Student account and be willing to travel between Dec. 8 and Jan 14., 2024. If tickets sell out, a follow-up offer will be available good for $25 off any flight booked through the Student Universe website.

If you're headed to Shanty Creek, the home of Schuss Mountain ski slopes, tubing runs and cross-country trails, be sure to pack your credit cards. The resort switched to cashless payments ahead this winter’s ski and snowsport season.

Weed on the border: What happened when marijuana money came to small U.P. towns

Growing green: Weed has become a big business along Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin border. There’s a battle for market share and large quantities of commercial marijuana entering neighboring states—especially Wisconsin—where the plant remains illegal. While it’s creating opportunity for business, it’s creating problems, too.

In small towns like Menominee, for instance, licensing disputes have led to lawsuits. It’s also become a risky trip for some drivers. While possession in Michigan is legal, cops just across the border in Wisconsin are ticketing customers as soon as they cross the state line with their purchases.

No smoking: Michigan could soon see the end of flavored tobacco sales under a package of bills, introduced in the state Senate early last month, which hope to crack down on underage smoking.

Detroit on track for fewest homicides in over 50 years, officials say

Lowest in decades: Detroit's homicide rates are close to hitting its lowest point in more than 50 years. Through Nov. 30, the city recorded 228 homicides, an 18% decrease over the same period in 2022, The Associated Press reports. If the trend holds, Detroit will have the fewest homicides since 1966 when there were 214.

Bring them home: Michigan State Police are hosting an "ID the Missing” event in Bay County with hopes of bringing closure to potentially thousands of missing persons cases.

In Washtenaw County: A man previously convicted for making anti-Semitic threats against Michigan’s attorney general has been charged with violating his probation after guns were found in his apartment.

Rain, snow chances to roll into Michigan Wednesday

Rainy night: The weather during the day on Wednesday is going to be dry, with only a slight chance of flurries in southwest Michigan early in the morning. The chance for rain and snow showers is going to return to the state on Wednesday night, but don’t expect much.

In the U.P.: The wintry period of cold and snow is going to take a little break this week into the Upper Peninsula, as warm temperatures are expected to return. Parts of Northern Michigan could end up reaching the mid to upper 40s before the week is over.

Annual forecast: Much of the nation could be colder and snowier this winter, particularly close to the Great Lakes, The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts.
