I know many of you aren't thrilled that the chilly days are finally upon us. But here's something to look forward to: Three meteor showers will light up November’s long, chilly nights.
November holds the nights of peak activity for the Southern Taurid, Northern Taurid, and Leonid meteor showers, according to the American Meteor Society, or AMS.
In that mix we’ll also have the tail end of October’s Orionids and the start of December’s Geminids, which makes November a month of overlapping opportunities to watch for shooting stars.
So bundle up and look up, starry nights are ahead.

| What drove every employee of this Michigan Dollar General to quit |
They all walked out: After months of trying to get extra help, a Dollar General store manager in Holland quite. Her entire staff of eight employees eventually followed her out the door, and the store closed. A piece of printer paper with a handwritten message is now taped on the window: “Closed until further notice!” It hangs under a “Now Hiring” sign. Why? Read the story here. Could there be others like it?:Dollar General stores are seemingly everywhere. With roughly 700 Michigan locations, the bright yellow signs dot rural highways and cluster in cities like Detroit, Grand Rapids and Flint. Dollar General has rapidly expanded over the past two decades with no signs of slowing despite concerns about its impact. The only Michigan county without one: Dollar Generals are everywhere – except in one Michigan county. Leelanau County communities have managed to keep out Dollar General even as the most prolific retailer in the United States has rapidly expanded with more than 19,000 locations across the country. |

What El Niño and a mild winter does not mean for Michigan |
Misconceptions: We need to talk about a few misconceptions on the new winter forecast. This coming winter weather pattern is expected to be dominated by El Niño and of course by a warming trend in the global temperature. The official weather forecast from NOAA reads warmer-than-normal and drier-than-normal for winter.
Here’s the first thing to clear up. NOAA issues a WINTER forecast. Winter to us meteorologists is December, January and February. I’ve already heard that the winter forecast is wrong because we are going to have some snow showers around Halloween.
So much rain: Heavy rain has been falling over northern Michigan for almost a week. The rain has also shifted into southern Michigan over the past few days. Muskegon community has 600 ideas to revitalize The Lakes Mall |
Ask the internet: Muskegon’s online community has ideas to improve and update The Lakes Mall — 600 ideas and counting that is.
A Facebook post prompted the 32,000 members of the Muskegon Informed group to “brainstorm what can we bring to that mall to hopefully save it from closing.”
Although there is no confirmation that the mall is closing, there have been more than 600 comments suggesting different uses for the The Lakes Mall in Fruitport Township since the post was uploaded on Oct. 7. Here are just a few suggestions. Also on the west side:What’s being built along Chicago Drive? A new construction project along Chicago Drive is set to bring three businesses to downtown Hudsonville. Also on the west side: After 14 hours of a termination hearing in Ottawa County over two days, the board of commissioners is set to vote on Monday whether to fire Administrative Health Officer Adeline Hambley. |

A wild first weekend in high school football playoffs |
Survive and advance: The first round of high school football playoffs was wet and wild on Friday. Here are the results and the updated brackets for the 2023 playoffs. More twists and turns in the UM scandal: The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero both say the NFL would try to uphold any further penalty levied by the NCAA from the two, separate investigations into Harbaugh’s football program at Michigan, using Ohio State’s Jim Tressel as an example. Monday Night Football!Don't forget tea time this afternoon so you can stay up for Monday Night Football. Everything went wrong last week against the Ravens and fans are hoping it was just an anomaly. Despite the fan trauma, Jared Goff remains even-keeled and focused on the next task at hand -- the Las Vegas Raiders. One thing that would sure help, marked improvement from Jameson Williams - and the Lions believe it's coming. They're also without two starters and Frank Ragnow is doubtful. |

Judge orders barge must be sold or removed from Great Lakes |
Time to go: The barge best known for repeatedly sinking in Lake Michigan was hauled onshore Friday morning – at least partially – and its owner appeared in court less than an hour later.
That’s where a judge gave Daniel Lewis Balcom, aka Donald “Moses” Balcom, until Dec. 8 to find a permanent solution for his wayward barge or face criminal trial on a laundry list of Great Lakes violations. The court ordered if the barge isn’t sold or a destination out of Great Lakes waters found by then, Balcom’s case will be bound over to circuit court for trial. Grants are coming: Michigan state environmental regulators will divvy up more than $16 million in federal infrastructure funding to utilities and power cooperatives to improve the resiliency of the state’s aging electric grid. Road closures ahead: Michigan is turning the calendar to November but the construction schedule is still full of new closures that could cause traffic slowdowns this week. |
