Coronavirus changed everything in 2020. Will the pandemic wind down in 2021? For many, 2020 was a year of despair. COVID-19 has sickened hundreds of thousands of Michigan residents. Tens of thousands have been hospitalized. More than 12,000 have died. The pandemic ravaged the state’s economy, deepened the political divide, and laid bare racial inequities in health care. Lockdowns and restrictions cut off people from friends and family, classmates and co-workers, impacting almost every aspect of everyday life. But there are many who feel that 2021 will be different. You still should get a vaccine, experts say A little more than a week before Halloween, 3-year-old Messiah Williams was shot and killed when police say several men opened fire on his family’s Flint home. Now Messiah’s family is hoping the state will adopt a new law in the slain boy’s name that will make it mandatory for anyone who shoots into a populated area and kills a child to be imprisoned for life without parole. “With Messiah’s Law, it’ll basically be a child’s law that if you shoot into a house, a car, or a crowd and a child dies, you’ll get natural life without parole,” said Messiah’s father, Henry Williams. “That does not exist at this point.” READ MORE SCHOOLSMore than 50,000 students left Michigan public schools this year. More than 50,000 students have fled Michigan’s K-12 public schools this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, a mass exodus that could amount to millions of dollars in lost school funding from the state. School leaders are now tasked with finding those students and bringing them back to the public school system next year. But the return of those students is not a guarantee, as thousands of Michigan families have opted for alternatives like homeschooling and charter schools amid the pandemic. With that in mind, why not keep track of our upcoming lineup of meteor showers so you can create your own star party? It’s simple enough. A few lawn chairs, an old blanket laid out on the lawn, or get fancy and blow up an air mattress or two and drag them outside.
