In today's newsletter, the Upper Peninsula's tourism industry struggles amid warm winter, a recap of Michigan's politics and a historic Sleeping Bear Inn is now open for reservations |
Feel right at home at these Michigan restaurants |
Between the flavor and history, I think there are few things better than family recipes that have been passed down through generations. Savor tasty dishes that feel like home-cooked meals at these family-owned restaurants across Michigan. Ellnora's Kitchen has brought flavorful soul food and barbecue to southeast Grand Rapids for more than 17 years. The restaurant's best selling menu items include rib tips, turkey knuckles, and soul food plates with a meat and two side options. Munchie's Diner in Buena Vista serves up a "taste of soul" through cakes, pies, and soul food. If you're in the mood for Mexican, head to Muskegon to try Tacos El Volcan. The food truck creates plates of authentic Mexican food like tacos, burritos, tamales, tortas and guaraches. |

A ghost town: Upper Peninsula tourism reckons with warm winter |
Lost winter: Unseasonably warm weather, little snowfall and muddy trails have hollowed out the winter tourism industry across the Upper Peninsula. This crisis has devastated the small communities that rely on a thick blanket of snow to keep the economy humming. Help needed: Everything from snowmobile rentals to ski hills and local eateries have been impacted by what’s being called the “lost winter.” A coalition of 43 western Upper Peninsula businesses are pushing for disaster relief after they lost an estimated $3.1 million during the unprecedentedly warm December. Speaking of warmer weather: A record warm December, a slightly warm January and a record warm February all adds up to the warmest winter on record for at least a handful of Michigan cities. |

Dolly Parton’s free book program in Southwest Michigan needs donations to continue |

The program works with local partners to provide books free of charge to all children younger than 5 and their families, regardless of income, each month. Extra class time: Some students in Kalamazoo now have a six-day school week. The district’s new optional Saturday school launched on Feb. 24 for third through fifth graders performing below grade level. Also in education: The University of Michigan Ross School of Business is celebrating 100 years of growth from an offshoot of the economics department into one of the world's highest-ranking schools. |

Investigation is closed, but Michigan deputy’s death remains a mystery |
That's a first: Two years after a retired Michigan jail deputy was discovered bloody and confused in his Jackson County home, authorities have closed the suspicious death investigation that followed. Police initially suspected an assault caused the injuries that led to Bryan Wickham’s death days later, but they were never been able to prove it. Molotov cocktails: Police said they have located and questioned a Detroit woman suspected of firebombing a Springport home and injuring a homeowner last week. More in crime: Months after two motorcyclists were killed in a crash in rural Saginaw County, a 22-year-old woman has been charged with causing their deaths. |

Historic Sleeping Bear Inn now open for reservations this summer |
Take a trip: For the first time in almost half a century, the historic Sleeping Bear Inn within Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is once again opening its doors to guests this summer. Dating back to 1866, Sleeping Bear Inn initially provided lodging for travelers and local workers before transitioning into a tourist hotel. Uncovered: A construction project to renovate the Grand Rapids Public Museum led to a “remarkable discovery” that offers insight into the region’s rich milling history, officials said. In its hey day: What is now a placid, community lake in was once a battlefield of fierce competition between steamboat captains vying for customers. The history of Reeds Lake in East Grand Rapids dates back to 1834, and the East Grand Rapids History Room is now preserving the stories of the ships. |
