Morning Briefing

MONDAY, JULY 17, 2023

In today's newsletter, new tech ‘annihilates’ toxic PFAS chemicals, Michigan Amazon workers join national Prime week strike, and Mackinac celebrates new national awards for best island and best resorts.

There were quite a few celebrity appearances in Michigan last weekend

"Step Brothers" star John C. Reilly made a pit stop at a Grand Rapids deli and Bret Michaels met Bret Michaels at Pine Knob at his first-ever "Parti-Gras" concert.

Ed Sheeran delivered two of the most amazing concerts Michiganders have ever witnessed by performing an intimate theater show on Friday and bringing out Eminem as a surprise guest at Ford Field on Saturday.

More big news from last weekend includes the Powerball. There was no winner of $829M jackpot and ticket sales fell short of expectations.  These are the luckiest numbers of 2023 (so far).

Forever no more: New tech ‘annihilates’ toxic PFAS chemicals

Picture this: At one end of the facility, tanker trucks unload a toxic soup. By the time it leaves the other end, only water, carbon dioxide and salt remain.

The info: At Heritage-Crystal Clean in Wyoming, a new technology is busy taking the forever out of “forever chemicals.” The West Michigan facility is home to the PFAS Annihilator system, a first-to-market treatment process that destroys concentrated PFAS compounds in landfill leachate.

Tigers shut out in Seattle, miss out on sweep

The Detroit Tigers missed a chance to sweep in Seattle, falling to the Mariners 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at T-Mobile Field. The Tigers had only six hits -- five singles and a double -- and got a runner into scoring position only twice.

"I have no idea where that came from": Team president Scott Harris heard the buzz that the Detroit Tigers were all certain to take one of three college players atop the 2023 MLB Draft. He was amused by it because he knew it wasn’t true.

In high school sports: The Michigan High School Athletic Association released its annual participation numbers Friday, and wrestling saw the biggest growth during the 2022-23 academic year, including a significant leap in the state’s girls grapplers.
