Michigan’s weather this week will start off pretty quiet. We will continue in the stormy-toward-the-weekend pattern. This week’s storm looks to track farther north than last weekend’s storm. This could put the southern half of Lower Michigan into our first widespread 60-degree day late this week. Wednesday calls for rain, Friday could be that 60-degree day, and over the weekend we might see some snow. The good news is the colder temperatures after a storm will only last for one day before the next warm-up starts. We know it was a mild winter around our part of the Great Lakes this year. With the mild winter came not much ice cover on the Great Lakes. Here are the visuals of the lacking ice cover. |

Top 5 places for liquor sales in each Michigan county |
Number one: Of the 11,000-plus businesses that bought liquor from the state, none bought more than Total Wine in Novi – which purchased nearly $11.5 million worth of liquor. For comparison, the bottom 10 counties combined in Michigan didn’t buy that much liquor. The data shows: Unsurprisingly, Wayne County, the state’s most populous, led Michigan in liquor sales in 2022 with $444 million. But Mackinac County had the most liquor sales per capita with $358.81 per county resident. See 2022 liquor sales per capita for each county here. Another $50M injected into Michigan’s ‘Missing Middle’ housing grant program |
Second round of funding: The state folded an additional $50 million into Michigan’s housing grant program, Missing Middle, to entice developers to increase the state’s housing stock. About the effort: The Missing Middle program offsets construction costs for developers investing in, constructing, or substantially rehabbing properties in Michigan. Eligible properties will target residents with household incomes between 185% and 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines. For a family of four that range would include salaries of $51,338 to $83,250. For unemployment news: Time is running out for Michigan workers wrongly accused of unemployment fraud to join a $20 million class action settlement with the state. |

‘I want justice,’ says Michigan mother sentenced to life for killing daughter at behest of SpongeBob SquarePants hallucination |
"If it was me": Having pleaded guilty to brutally stabbing her 3-year-old daughter to death at the behest of a vision of SpongeBob SquarePants, an Iosco County mother’s prison sentence was a foregone conclusion: life without the possibility of parole. You can watch her give a statement here. Also in crime: A man who raped and killed two girls in the late 1960s is seeking to be released after decades in psychiatric hospitals. Theodore Glenn Williams, 84, is believed to be the only one still held under a repealed criminal-sexual psychopath state law. Bay City Central High School: Police have arrested a teenager suspected of leaving threatening notes at Bay City Central High School. The notes prompted school officials to close classes both Friday and Monday. |

Universally accessible water trail launching this summer at Up North state park |
Easier and more protected: A universally accessible water trail will launch at Ludington State Park this summer, officials said. The yet unnamed trail will begin at the park’s universally accessible kayak/canoe launch near Hamlin Lake Beach and continue in an approximately 2-mile loop, including going under two bridges. Preservation grants: Two historic lighthouses in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will soon get a combined $168,000 in renovations after being awarded state grants. More in public interest: 21-year old Nate Peck is from Linden near Flint. He’s the lead singer of a rock band from Metro Detroit who just wowed the “American Idol” judges with his audition of a Dokken song. They called him "the best rock singer we’ve had." |

26 Burger King locations closing in Metro Detroit, more than 400 jobs lost |
EYM King of Michigan LLC, a franchisee, is planning to close 26 Burger King restaurants across the Metro Detroit area, including locations in Flint, Dearborn Heights, Southfield, Royal Oak, Livonia and Warren. Speaking of the southeast: Ann Arbor is continuing its 10,000 Trees Initiative with another free tree giveaway this spring, registration is now open to any Washtenaw County residents. In the Upper Peninsula: The number of identified fungal disease cases associated with Billerud Paper Mill in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula has grown to 53. |
