Thunderstorm forecast this week may be tamed some by timing, sky conditions |
We have one real legit round of rain and thunderstorms this week. We also have a spotty thunderstorm pattern and a cool batch of thundershowers. Today, there could be a few scattered thunderstorms across northern Lower Michigan. Southern Michigan should stay dry until Wednesday’s storms. Skywatching: June is finally here, ushering in a new summer stargazing season and some sweet celestial events. This month, Northern Hemisphere skywatchers will be treated to bright, beautiful planets, the full Strawberry Moon, and balmier nights for admiring the skies. Garden Talk: If you love your lilies in your garden, you may be living a gardening nightmare. The lily leaf beetle is eating its way across Michigan’s lilies. Here’s a secret to save your flowers. |

Kent County’s library system receives nation’s highest award |
'Affirmation of the commitment': The Kent District Library was one of five public libraries across the U.S. to receive the 2024 National Medal for Museum and Library Service from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the nation’s highest honor given to libraries that make significant and exceptional contributions to their communities. Awesome: Fourth-grader Ellis Richardson was crowned the winner of the Michigan Doodle for Google contest for his vision of a better world. He's now one of 55 finalists in the national Doodle for Google competition. Know someone?: Nominations are now open for the 2025-26 Michigan Teacher of the Year program. To be eligible for selection, teachers must have a valid Michigan teaching certificate, at least five years of teaching experience and be in good standing with their district. |

MSU delayed release of Nassar documents for nearly 2 years for ‘a pittance,’ advocate says |
'Delayed accountability': For years, MSU said they wouldn’t release thousands of documents related to the Larry Nassar case because of ongoing insurance litigation. Now, the timing of the settlements has drawn renewed criticism from advocates for Nassar’s victims. It was a violent start to begin a new month as three people were shot and killed in the Grand Rapids area in under a 24-hour span. The killings mark the second occasion in nearly seven months where gun violence claimed three lives in one day within city limits. Despite that statistic, Grand Rapids is still a safe place to be, the city’s top cop said. In public interest: The names, addresses, phone numbers and credit card details of Ticketmaster customers may have been uncovered as part of a data breach announced by Live Nation last week. |
