In today's newsletter, rain should fall more often over Michigan, Trump calls indictments ‘badge of honor’ in speech, and this is what's at Michigan’s westernmost point. |
A Fourth of July weekend is right around the corner |
Still making plans? Here's where you can see the fireworks in mid-Michigan, in the Grand Rapids and Muskegon areas, and around Washtenaw County. Plus, a reminder that the fireworks in Grand Haven won’t be on July 4th this year. Speaking of sparks, the DNR delivered an epic burn after a couple vandalized the new Tahquamenon Falls boardwalk. And while we're launching fireworks into the sky, remember these Michigan college professors who are helping NASA return to the Moon after 5 decades. |

Rain should fall more often over Michigan, Great Lakes, and here’s why |
We needed this: The wind flow aloft is quickly changing into a pattern more favorable for occasional rain and thunderstorms. Here’s a visual on why we will get bursts of rain more often over the next few weeks. With high waves in the forecast, the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for areas near Lake Michigan, effective until late Tuesday evening. As for the air: The National Weather Service in Gaylord, as well as Marquette, have issued Air Quality Alerts for the entire Upper Peninsula. By Wednesday, this smoke is expected to move south toward Wisconsin, following an area of low pressure that moves east. |

Trump calls indictments ‘badge of honor’ in Michigan speech
|
Visiting the mitten: Under multiple indictments and facing other criminal probes, former President Donald Trump was defiant throughout a speech Sunday night in Novi as he made his first Michigan campaign speech ahead of the 2024 election. What else: Trump also claimed transitioning to electric vehicles would “decimate” Michigan as he accepted the Oakland County Republican Party’s “man of the decade” award. More to know: Here are 4 takeaways from Trump’s first Michigan speech of 2024 election. |

‘Freaknik’ party drew hundreds to Saginaw before gunfire erupted, killing 2 and wounding 13 |
Advertised on social media, a weekend block party on Saginaw’s North Side grew massive and unwieldy, with attendees drawn from all over the state. As one day faded into another and police readied to disperse the 500-strong crowd, the situation devolved into wanton violence and gunfire. What happened: Police said a fight broke out between partygoers, which resulted in gunshots fired. In response, others in the crowd started shooting into the crowd and striking several individuals. As people fled, many were injured after being struck by fleeing vehicles. In Oakland County: Despite displaying “disturbing” behavior, Oxford High shooter Ethan Crumbley, 17, is competent to proceed with his sentencing hearings, an assistant prosecutor, his two defense attorneys and court-appointed guardian all said during the 17-year-old’s monthly jail placement hearing Friday, June 23. |

At Michigan’s westernmost point, a waterfall and a remote county park
|
Have you been? If the Upper Peninsula is shaped like a rabbit jumping over a mitten, then Legion County Park would be the very tip of that rabbit’s nose. Breathtaking: Along the park’s Lake Superior shoreline, a rocky spit protrudes into the mouth of the Montreal River, which forms the boundary between Wisconsin and the western U.P. So west: The river mouth is fenced on either side by rugged cliffs and are no signs marking the fact that the park sits at the westernmost point in the state of Michigan, in a part of Gogebic County that falls within the central time zone. |
