Even when I'm not in the market to buy a house, I still take an occasional scroll through Zillow just to see what's out there. If you're like me, you should check out our House of the Week series where we highlight some of the most awe-inspiring houses in the state. This week we featured an exclusive lakefront property near Jackson that comes with its own gated private peninsula. The best part? We now have a weekly Michigan Real Estate newsletter so you'll never miss a House of the Week and can keep up with the latest news on home values, home sales, real estate market trends and unique properties in Michigan. |

These are Michigan’s worst roads in 2023 |
That's a bumpy ride: Using a 1-to-10 grading system known as the Pavement Surface Evaluation and Rating (PASER) system, Michigan had about 1.8% of assessed roads get a “1,” which is the worst score available. Oakland, the state’s second-most populous county, is home to the most miles of 1-rated road (41.1). See the complete map here. Share your thoughts: Michigan is seeking input from residents to make its roads safer for all users. A 15-question online survey is now available for residents to share their thoughts about the “conditions and behaviors present in fatal and serious injury crashes” on state roads involving walkers, bikers, and users of other forms of nonmotorized transportation. More in public interest: Archeologists uncovered a ring that dates back to the 1700s near the Mackinac Bridge on Tuesday, June 18. |

Urban heat island effect shows which Michigan cities hold the most heat |
Standing out: An urban heat island is the warmer temperature inside a bigger city. Some cities across the U.S. are notorious for having hotter temperatures by a few degrees when compared to surrounding temperature readings. We even see and feel that urban heat island effect at some locations in Michigan. See the cities that stick out as hot spots here. To know: The thermometer says it’s 90 but your phone says it “feels like” 95. What does that mean? The heat index, or “feels like” temperature, is a way to express how hot it feels to the human body. It’s not too hot to storm: You may have heard someone say, “It’s too hot to rain.” The hot stretch we are in now doesn’t have this kind of dryness of some heat waves. Here’s why. |

Detroit man’s life sentence vacated by judge in case involving deadly 2012 fire |
"Won some relief": A man once sentenced to life in prison will go free this week after 11 years behind bars because a Wayne County judge vacated his convictions and sentences, officials said. The latest: The last of four defendants tied to a 2-year-old boy’s self-inflicted gunshot death pleaded guilty Tuesday, June 18, to being a felon in possession of a firearm. The boy, King Muhummad, accidentally shot himself Oct. 24 inside a GMC Yukon at a Sunoco station in Lansing. An update: A construction worker found what police confirmed are human remains in front of the University of Michigan marching band practice field. |

Pistons fire head coach Monty Williams after one season |
One and done: For the second time since the end of the regular season, the Detroit Pistons will launch a search for a new head coach. After enduring the worst season in franchise history, the Pistons have fired Monty Williams after just one year. Who could be next? As they begin their search, here’s a look at several candidates the Pistons might consider for the vacancy. In football:Michigan’s staff is off to a strong start in the 2026 recruiting class, landing a commitment from Cocoa (Fla.) four-star quarterback Brady Hart on Tuesday. The No. 92 overall prospect and No. 7 quarterback nationally, per the 247Sports Composite rankings, becomes the Wolverines’ first verbal pledge in the 2026 cycle. Here’s what it means. |

Here’s your chance to walk to Canada |
Crossing the border:The Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge Walk is your chance to walk to Canada and enjoy a great view on the way. Like the Mackinac Bridge, the International opens to walkers once a year. This year’s event is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 29. Travel with your pup: This week’s heat wave will have Michiganders flocking to the lake, but don’t forget to bring your furry friends, too. Along Lake Michigan there are several stretches of shoreline that are dog friendly, including state parks without pet restrictions. Here are 12. Speaking of Lake Michigan: Ludington is hosting three sunset bonfires with live music at Stearns Park Beach. |
