DNR wants Michigan residents to squish this invasive, spotted insect, here’s why |
Get rid of 'em: The invasive spotted lanternfly feeds on more than 70 different plants, including grape vines and hardwood trees and can cause nuisance levels that hinder outdoor activities. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says if you see one, squish it and report it. As for the fish: The DNR says it’s planning to stock some adult arctic grayling in Upper Peninsula lakes to make room in its hatchery system for an expanding bloodstock which is being raised as part of a species reintroduction program. Be outside: There’s a nature preserve in the eastern Upper Peninsula filled with moss-covered boulders that dot the landscape of a thick cedar forest, and a picturesque footpath winds through the woods to Lake Huron. |

Holland restaurant owner loses appeal after defying COVID-19 mandates |
Marlena’s Bistro & Pizzeria: The state Court of Appeals rejected Holland restaurant owner Marlena Pavlos-Hackney’s challenges to her food-license suspension for ignoring orders to close during the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Almost hurricane strength' power grid: Consumers Energy officials said they will file with state regulators a new five-year plan to improve reliability for their nearly 2 million electric ratepayers. Brand new winter forecast: Great Lakes region shouldn’t worry about extended periods of nastiness |
The details: NOAA produced a new forecast for December, January and February. Their indicators strongly point toward a winter with much milder conditions compared to many winters past. You may need an umbrella: A slow moving storm system will inch into the southern half of Michigan over the next several days. There will be some meaningful rain amounts over part of southern Michigan. Speaking of water: An invasive mussel is destroying shipwrecks deep in the depths of the Great Lakes, forcing archeologists and amateur historians into a race against time to find as many sites as they can before losing any physical trace of centuries-long maritime history. |
