Michigan state trooper charged with murder for striking man with police car |
An update: Michigan’s attorney general has authorized a charge of second-degree murder against a Michigan State Police trooper who struck and killed a Black man, Samuel Sterling, fleeing from officers. On top of the murder charge, Nessel’s office also charged state police Det./Sgt. Brian Keely, 50, with one count of involuntary manslaughter, a 15-year felony. Keely was suspended without pay after the incident unfolded. The latest on a similar, but separate case: A Kent County sheriff’s deputy whose patrol car struck and killed a fleeing teen will not be charged in the teen’s death. Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker issued the ruling in an April 8 crash that killed Riley Doggett, 17, of Wyoming. The teen died May 9 at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. More in crime: In the days after Ruby Garcia was found dead on the side of a Grand Rapids highway, her killing garnered national attention. This week, the accused killer is set to appear in court where a judge will hear testimony and make a decision whether the case proceeds to trial. |

Michigan aims for millions in federal dollars for environmental justice |
'We are making an investment': State officials want to bring into Michigan as many federal dollars as possible for environmental justice efforts. The state dedicated $11 million to support community organizations focused on environmental and climate justice across Michigan. The idea is to help groups each pull down as much as $20 million in federal funds through the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s community change grants. In recent years, Michigan passed a law setting a 100% clean energy standard by 2040. Wind farms and solar fields aren’t being built fast enough to offset those lost megawatts from coal. So at the crossroads of a climate crisis and an energy crisis, the future of clean energy may be nuclear. Locally: Renewable energy will be on the ballot in November as Ann Arbor voters decide whether the city should start a city-run sustainable energy utility. After years of exploring the idea, City Council voted in May to put the question to voters in the Nov. 6 presidential election. |

Gustnadoes smack parts of Michigan during Memorial Day Weekend storms |
A line of potentially severe storms that marched across Michigan’s Lower Peninsula late Sunday afternoon and evening were packing thunder, lightning - and a few windy surprises. While some people initially reported what they thought was a tornado touchdown, the National Weather Service (NWS) team in Grand Rapids explained that what people were seeing were actually gustnadoes that were embedded in that storm line. We have a very active storm track now. The storm track runs right over Michigan now and for at least the next few weeks. An “active storm track” means there are a lot of individual storm systems riding along in the storm track, also known as the jetstream. We can see this storm action by looking at the satellite image spanning across the north Pacific Ocean. Garden Talk: There are always new varieties of flowers to try. Here are a few recommendations from a long-time Michigan greenhouse. |

Detroit Lions believe they struck gold with new defensive line coach |
When Dan Campbell and Aaron Glenn spoke to reporters for the first time in a few months, the head coach and defensive coordinator each had a similar feeling about new Detroit Lions defensive line coach Terrell Williams. Campbell was asked about the progression of Lions defensive tackle Brodric Martin, then pointed to his confidence in Williams, saying “I think he really is – he’s the best D-Line coach in this league. And if he’s not, then you can argue what place he is.” The head coach previously said this about Williams back at the scouting combine, praising him for his understanding of the game and proven ability to develop and get the most out of his players. Farewell: Another member of the Michigan football staff is heading out west to join Jim Harbaugh. Christina DeRuyter, who held a prominent role inside the Wolverines’ recruiting department over the past three seasons, announced late Monday her intention to join the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers as its next director of football logistics. |
