So how much more protection does a COVID booster shot offer? Experts keep describing COVID-19 vaccines as “extremely” effective. So why is a booster shot even necessary? And what additional protection does it offer? Anybody over the age of 18 is now eligible for a third shot of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine six months after their second dose. Meanwhile, those who got the Johnson and Johnson inoculation are encouraged to get a second shot at least two months after the first shot. Vaccines already significantly reduce the chance of COVID infection, hospitalization and death. Booster shots reduce those odds even further, based on preliminary studies. The people most likely to benefit from boosters are 50 and older; people who are immunocompromised, and adults who live in long-term care regardless of age.
