See how common white Christmases are in Michigan

What are the odds?: The National Weather Service in Grand Rapids went through records dating back to 1953 to show the prevalence of white Christmases in southwest and south-central Michigan over the years. 

 

In meteorology, a white Christmas is defined as a Christmas having at least one inch of snow on the ground by 7 am.Unfortunately for us, this Christmas is looking to be a snowless one due to warmer temperatures.  


More green than white: Michigan isn't alone in its search for snowflakes on Christmas morning. The mountainous west is about the only place in the U.S. where you can find a pretty white Christmas.

2 Michigan liberal arts colleges are best in Midwest, Wall Street Journal ranking says

Best in class: Albion College in Calhoun County and Kalamazoo College made the top-10 ranking of liberal arts colleges located in the Midwest, according to the Wall Street Journal and College Pulse.

 

Books for all: A new $10,000 grant program will help Jennifer Dixon, a second-grade teacher in Ypsilanti, overhaul her classroom book selection to represent an increasingly diverse student body.

 

More in education: Ferris State University grad Grace Szymchack's 10-day-old baby was cozily tucked into her graduation gown as she crossed the stage on Dec. 15. Her baby, Annabelle, was scheduled to be delivered two days after graduation, but made an early appearance on Dec. 6.

Michigan expands places where people can register to vote

Three federal veterans affairs locations, along with eight Michigan state departments, agencies and offices, will be able to register their clientele to vote after an order Monday from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. 

 

2024 presidential race: The Colorado Supreme Court on Tuesday declared former President Donald Trump ineligible for the White House under the U.S. Constitution’s insurrection clause and removed him from the state’s presidential primary ballot. 


Need to know: Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel on Monday warned Michigan customers of Comcast/Xfinity of a nationwide data breach of the companies.

Michigan receives formal notice from NCAA over recruiting violations

What's next: The University of Michigan received a notice of allegations from the NCAA this week, bringing to a close the governing body's multi-year investigation into its football program over recruiting violations. 

 

The notice includes four Level II violations for impermissible on- and off-campus recruiting and improper use of coaches along with a Level I violation against head coach Jim Harbaugh, who is accused of misleading NCAA investigators during the investigation.

 

Giving back: Detroit Pistons point guard and Flint native Monte Morris sponsored the makeover of ten kids’ hospital room redesigns at Hurley Medical Center on Tuesday, Dec. 19. The children are facing an extended hospitalization due to their medical conditions.

Nearly 800 kids received toys for Christmas thanks to Little Miss Flint

Mari's Toy Shop: Mari Copeny, also known as Little Miss Flint, has been on a mission for more than eight years to provide for Flint kids year-round. This holiday season, nearly 800 children were gifted toys and coats during her annual giveaway.

 

Putting on a show: The Wenser family's extreme Christmas decor at their in Sterling Heights home might rival that Clark Griswold. Dan Wesner, owner of Wesner Tuxedo, has been creating various holiday displays since 1999. This year's display was inspired by A Charlie Brown Christmas” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

 

In Frankenmuth: There are just a few days left to see Santa Claus at Bronner’s, “the world’s largest Christmas store.” You can see Santa until Sunday, Dec. 24 on Christmas Eve.
