The second annual 75 North event – a way to recognize cities connected but not limited to Interstate 75 – features three days of music, dancing, a Lowrider car show and afterparties in downtown Flint.

All 16 pro-Trump electors have pleaded not guilty to Michigan felony charges

Day in court: After nine more arraignments Thursday morning, all 16 pro-Donald Trump electors have pleaded not guilty to the eight felony charges Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office has leveled against them.

 

Prosecutors with Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel's office are requesting an Antrim County judge to forbid three remaining defendants from using an entrapment defense at an upcoming Gov. Whitmer kidnap plot trial.

 

An update: After two scuffles between Republican officials at a Clare hotel earlier this year, including one resulting in a kicked groin and broken dentures, prosecutors have leveled charges against three alleged combatants.

Whitmer administration backs more aggressive Michigan clean energy standard

New energy: A proposal that would require Michigan to source 100% of the state’s energy from carbon-free sources received its strongest endorsement yet Thursday when Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist explicitly backed the more aggressive standard at a press conference in Detroit.

 

Clean up: Michigan state officials will take over control of 21 old oil wells in Ottawa and Ingham counties and receive $2.85 million in civil fines in a settlement with an oil and gas company. 

 

End of an era: The James De Young Power Plant in Holland crumbled to the ground on Thursday as thousands watched the demolition. The power plant supplied energy to Holland for 78 years before closing in 2017.

Where, when to look for up to 90 meteors per hour during Perseid shower this weekend

Look up: Stargazers, cross your fingers for clear skies this weekend: The annual Perseid meteor shower will be at its plentiful peak, creating the best window all summer for witnessing shooting stars. 

 

Weekend ahead: This weekend's weather will be mostly dry with a rain and thunderstorm system moving through Friday night and east of Michigan by sunrise Saturday. 

 

Fall is on the way:The weather across Northern Michigan will have just a hint of early fall in it. The temperatures will be five to 10 degrees cooler than normal. It will be a mostly dry weekend with just a few isolated showers.

Lions roster moves: Teddy Bridgewater signed, Justin Jackson retires

Lions lineup: On Thursday, the Detroit Lions made several significant roster moves. Of particular note is the official announcement of the signing of quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. However, the announcement also brought the surprising news of running back Justin Jackson's retirement.

 

More Lions news: The Detroit Lions are releasing offensive guard Logan Stenberg after three seasons, ESPN reports.

 

Winning team : Reese Olson threw six shutout innings and Riley Greene crushed a 453-foot home run to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins in the series finale on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.

Endangered piping plovers flourish under tribe’s watch on remote Lake Michigan island

Coming back: It’s been a record year for Great Lakes piping plovers, a species first federally listed as endangered in 1985. This year scientists counted 80 unique breeding pairs across all five Great Lakes and monitored 85 nests. That’s eight more pairs than last year and the most since the species was first added to the federal Endangered Species List.

 

Stargazing: Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will host a series of "Night Sky Navigator" events for stargazing enthusiasts in the coming weeks, with programming for educators, students and the public.

 

In Grand Blanc: One of the most popular food truck festivals in Genesee County will gather one last Friday to close out the 2023 summer series this week. Here’s what you’ll find to eat.
