In today’s newsletter, COVID-19 is again on the rise in Michigan, remembering former MSU basketball star Adreian Payne and our weather could take a (slightly) cooler turn. |
We love our state, but where exactly does Michigan begin and end? |
Perhaps it isn't something that has ever crossed your mind, but in the state capitol this week, the boundaries of Michigan are a topic of discussion. Specifically, lawmakers focused on Michigan's border with Indiana. Bills headed to Gov. Whitmer's desk would formally establish the state borderline between our state and one of our neighbors to the south. It's something that has not been done since the early 1800s, and I thought you might like the scoop on this legislation. Enjoy your Michigan day, wherever you reside in our two peninsulas. |

COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths are climbing again in Michigan. |
The numbers are up: The seven-day average of confirmed COVID-19 deaths increased this week in Michigan for the first time since March. Now, all metrics measured here -- percentage of positive tests, new cases, and hospitalizations -- are on the rise. Outbreak numbers are up, too: In addition to cases, hospitalizations and deaths, the state also reports COVID-19 outbreaks. This week's report showed an increase in outbreaks this week as the BA.2 variant continues to spread. In other health news: Recent news of severe, unexplained cases of virus-linked hepatitis in children might be causing some parents alarm, but one Michigan doctor said she would not be “overly anxious.” |

It's hot out there! But a cool-down is in sight for Michigan. Or is it? |
Feeling hot, hot, hot: We are telling you what you already know -- it's warm out there, particularly for mid-May. Some of us, like your humble newsletter curator, are really enjoying it. But it can't last forever, right? So, what exactly is going to happen? As MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa explains here, there is a little cool-down coming. But it won't dip us down into really cold weather, and it won't last very long. Will there be a chance of an overnight freeze during the cool-down? What kind of temperatures are we talking about here? Mark provides the details.
Some wacky weather in Traverse City: Michigan weather is one of a kind. The temperature in Traverse City went from a record high of 92 degrees to plunging into the low-60s on Tuesday. Take a look. |

Looking to spend time outdoors? We have some ideas. |
Apply for a job with Michigan's state parks: Michigan parks need summer workers. So far, the parks system says it only has about half of their seasonal jobs filled this year. Need a summer gig or know someone who does? That's definitely one way to spend time in nature. Attend Michigan's largest Memorial Day parade: It's back! After a two-year absence, Mackinaw City's big Memorial Day parade will return. If you love a parade, this event is for you. This house for sale includes an 'outdoor paradise:' With a private lake, you'll want to stay outside all summer. This home on the market in Midland has that attractive natural amenity listed among its highlights. You can see it here.
