Want your sleep back? Bill introduced in Michigan Senate would end Daylight Saving Time |
Spring forward: If you’re one of the many Michiganders still missing that hour of sleep after Daylight Saving Time, relief could be on the way. A bill introduced last week in the Michigan Senate would put the idea of ending Daylight Saving Time on the November ballot for voters to decide. 2024 election: President Joe Biden’s choice to campaign in Saginaw County nine months in advance of the general election points to the importance of the region to the next presidential race, political experts said. Also in politics: The Michigan Court of Appeals last week dismissed a Michigan Republican Party and Republican National Committee lawsuit naming three Flint election workers over the number of election inspectors in past elections. |

Ann Arbor landlords charging renters over $6,000 to get in line for apartments |
Steep price: Waitlist fees for apartments could be banned after two Ann Arbor landlords, Campus Management and Prime Student Housing, charged $6,745 and $6,887.50, respectively, to prospective tenants without the guarantee of an apartment. Limiting applications: A six-month pause on short-term rental applications has been proposed in Muskegon, in addition to increasing registration fees, adding enforcement penalties and implementing a “good neighbor” policy. Ruffled feathers: Webster Township, roughly 10 miles from Ann Arbor has told a handful of property owners they can’t have chickens, cows and other livestock on their land because their lots aren’t big enough, even taking some of them to court to enforce violations. |

Michigan’s wildfire season is about to start, based on weather conditions we’re seeing |
Blaze: Michigan’s wildfire season is usually April and May, before grasses green up and evergreen trees fill their needles with water. But without soaking rains in the next month and the potential for a worsening drought, Michigan could be very susceptible to fast-starting and spreading wildfires. For the kids: The Grass River Natural Area in Bellaire is hosting a three-day camp where children will learn alongside naturalists as they tap maple trees for sap, track animals along the preserve’s boardwalks, sip hot chocolate by a campfire, and enjoy other seasonal outdoor activities. Also in Mother Nature: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is hosting several wild mushroom clinics at Michigan state parks this spring through the DNR’s Outdoor Skills Academy. |

New gun law might have deterred Michigan school shooting -- had it been in place |
In court: Proper gun storage took center stage this week during the trial of James Crumbley, the 47-year-old father of Michigan school shooter Ethan Crumbley. A new Michigan gun storage law, inspired by the Nov. 30, 2021 school shooting and similar tragedies, took effect Feb. 13. The law makes gun owners criminally liable if they fail to keep their guns locked away from children who might harm themselves or others. Violating the law carries up to a 15-year prison sentence. Jurors are being asked to find the father guilty of involuntary manslaughter for failing to prevent the killings of four Oxford High students. More in crime: Arenac County Sheriff’s deputies, Chippewa Tribal police, and Michigan State Police arrested a man after he broke into the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility, a former prison that has been closed since 2009. |
