Yesterday, I shared with you a new glamping site hidden in 45 acres of woods in Fennville. But what I failed to mention is one of their special perks: unlimited s’mores at night. Then today I dove into our article on why Mackinac Island’s fudge shops use electric blankets at night. What came next was arguably one of my best ideas: A s'more using Mackinac Island fudge for the chocolate. That's right, I wanna use that tiny wooden knife to slice a piece of fudge and plop it on a graham cracker with a perfectly roasted marshmallow. Probably not an original thought, but now it's all I can think about. |

Michigan’s summer gas rules begin this weekend. What does that mean? |
Starting Saturday, June 1, gas stations across eight Southeast Michigan counties will only be allowed to sell/dispense a summer formula of gas, which cannot exceed 7 pounds per square inch (PSI) vapor pressure. For customers, the summer-grade gas may offer a slight increase in fuel efficiency since it’s slower to evaporate. From Memorial Day to Labor Day: Teen drivers should now take extra care when on the road. It goes without saying that everyone should always drive safe and sober, but AAA Michigan is reminding parents and teens that Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of a period known as the “100 deadliest days for teen drivers.” A project begins: A three-mile stretch of I-94 may provide a glimpse at the future of technology-enabled roadways in Michigan that communicate digitally with vehicles capable of driving themselves. |

Gov. Whitmer increases Michigan’s goal of new homes built in hopes of lowering costs |
At the Mackinac Policy Conference: In an effort to address the state’s housing shortage, Michigan is ramping up its goal to produce tens of thousands of new homes in the next two years. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced on May 29 she was moving the state’s five-year housing production goal from the previous target of 75,000 homes permitted, rehabbed or built by September 2026 to a new target of 115,000 homes. Earlier this month, Mary Johnson, founder and lead pastor of Bay City’s Great Lakes Dream Center, vowed not to come down from the center’s rooftop until she raised $75,000 in funds and awareness for homelessness. Then, at about 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 28, her “Rooftop Survivor” challenge was over, as she met her goal some 15 grueling days later. In education: An alliance of three Michigan universities benefitted the state with nearly $24 billion in economic impact last year, officials said. |

Judge shocked after Michigan man tunes into suspended license hearing while driving |
'I don’t even know why he would do that': After a man was charged with driving on a suspended license, he appeared virtually in court – while driving. The man attended his hearing via Zoom on May 15 before Judge Cedric Simpson in Washtenaw County’s 14A District Court. Simpson revoked his bond and ordered that he turn himself in that day. ‘Sickening’: A former doctor was sentenced to federal prison for a scheme that included doing surgeries that patients did not need. Dr. Daniel J. Castro was sentenced to five years in federal prison, two years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $1.97 million in restitution. In health news: Bird flu has been confirmed in a dairy herd in Clinton County. Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Director Tim Boring announced that the highly pathogenic avian influenza was found after testing at Michigan State. |

When to see the Planet Parade: 6 planets to align in our morning skies |
The next spectacle: From late May through early June, the planets Saturn, Neptune, Mars, Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter will appear to come into alignment in the eastern skies just before dawn, according EarthSky. The best mornings for seeing this event are June 3 and 4. The latest: The May 7 tornado cost the city of Portage about $5.2 million so far, said City Manager Pat McGinnis. Some say it’s not enough. Travel easier: If you need to secure a new passport or update your old one, the U.S. Postal Service says it’s making that process much easier. Elvin Mercado, vice president, Retail and Post Office Operations for USPS announced this month that every Post Office location that processes passports is now offering a minimum of three hours a week where walk-in customers can visit and apply for their passport. |

Top 10 Michigan beaches list reveals we all prefer this Great Lake’s sandy shores |
The results are in: We all prefer Lake Michigan beaches. The sugar-sand shores of Lake Michigan claimed eight of the 10 top spots in the USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice 2024 awards for best beach in Michigan. One beach is on Lake Superior, and one is on the shore of Lake Huron. First Street Beach in Manistee was named the winner, beating Stearns Park in Ludington, Manistee’s neighbor to the south, which came in second. Others in the top 10 include Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, Oval Beach in Saugatuck, and Hunter’s Point Park in Copper Harbor. Woah: A trippy new art installation has made its way to the United States for the very first time and Michiganders are the first to experience it. “SKALAR: Reflections on Light and Sound,” is a kinetic art installation which has arrived in Michigan via Germany. |
