Michigan's marijuana industry still struggles with equality Recreational marijuana has only been legal in Michigan since December, but it has already proved to be big business within the state. The earnings are only projected to skyrocket in the coming years. Who is benefitting from the new, booming industry? Many municipalities are working to make sure the communities that have been negatively impacted historically by marijuana laws are now able to benefit from its legalization. The state’s Marijuana Regulatory Agency has a Social Equity Program that offers discount application fees and discount licensing fees, but the qualification process is lengthy and complicated. Entities are trying to provide equity, but when will it come to fruition?
