Michigan’s weekend will have a big round of storms gradually ending the hot spell |
Not too hot: A cooldown is heading to Michigan thanks to a large-scale storm system moving southeast out of Canada. It should set off a meaningful round of thunderstorms and then start to push the high temperatures down. Up North: For those who aren’t big fans of the intense heat, this forecast is certainly for you. Starting on Friday, most areas stay dry throughout the morning. Rain looks to move in for the Upper Peninsula Friday afternoon and evening. This should be a general, widespread rain event with severe weather not expected. Gov. Whitmer’s new task force could suggest laws, policies to reduce gun violence |
In politics: The new Michigan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force will examine the root causes of gun violence and recommend laws, policies and other potential solutions to help decrease it. Gov. Whitmer said the task force builds on laws centered around gun control and safety that were passed last year in the wake of mass shootings at Michigan State University and Oxford High School. Campaign trail: Democratic Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, candidate for U.S. Senate, hosted a rally Thursday in Grand Rapids, saying reproductive freedom is at risk if Republicans win control of Congress and the White House in November. In Lansing: State Rep. Neil Friske, R-Charlevoix, was arrested for an alleged felony-level offense on Thursday, according to Lansing police. Police responded to his neighborhood on reports of a man with a gun and possible shots fired. |

New program offers students college credit, training for in-demand science careers |
In class: Sixteen high school seniors are getting hands-on experience in STEM and earning free college credits from Ferris State University through a new summer program in Grand Rapids. The new FutureSolve initiative is a six-week program that launched June 10 focused on research and problem solving. Rising costs: Saginaw Valley State University has increased in-state tuition by more than 5 percent for the upcoming academic year. A Michigan undergraduate student taking 30 credits will pay $12,930, an increase of $690 from the previous year. At Michigan: The University of Michigan did not comply with federal requirements to investigate and act upon recent complaints of discrimination based on shared Jewish, Palestinian or Muslim ancestry on campus that led to a hostile environment on campus, the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights said. |

How much do the Detroit Pistons still owe Monty Williams after 1 season? |
Pay day: The Detroit Pistons dismissed head coach Monty Williams after one season on Wednesday. Since the Pistons fired Monty Williams without agreeing to a contract buyout, he will take home all of the $65 million remaining on his $78.5 million deal. The Suns still owe Williams $20 million over three years as part of a buyout agreement from his dismissal in Phoenix. In total, he will receive $85 million from two different franchises. Here's a look at how that measures up against some of sports' biggest buyouts. Giving back: Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Ben VanSumeren had a full-circle moment on Thursday. Rite Aid closing stores across Michigan |
Rite Aid plans to close at least 12 Michigan stores as a part of bankruptcy proceedings, but it could end up shuttering every store in the state. A document filed Monday, June 17 in U.S. Bankruptcy Court lists 27 stores that will be closing throughout Michigan and Ohio. But Rite Aid also sent a statement Monday to MLive saying that it plans to close all 186 stores in Michigan and nearly all 143 stores in Ohio. Paying up: The restaurant operator behind two popular Ann Arbor eateries has agreed to pay nearly $197,000 in back wages and damages for failing to properly pay overtime during the pandemic despite taking $1.62 million in federal aid. Buyer beware: Health officials are advising Michiganders to avoid Diamond Shruumz, a brand of edibles linked to severe symptoms, including seizures, loss of consciousness and vomiting. |
