The Frankenmuth Flower Festival blossomed on Friday with you-pick sunflowers, yoga in the flower fields and photo-worthy scenery at Grandpa Tiny’s Heritage Farm. How did the festival come to be? Well it started by mistake, then bloomed into a success. I'll give you a sneak peek into the story, the golden-yellow flowers were intended to be a cover crop. |

Much of Michigan has escaped our dry spell, drought monitor shows |
Back to normal: Our repeated rounds of showers have continued to weaken our ongoing summer drought. This drought still clings to the edges of Michigan, but these spots are few and far between. Also, this is what we have for rain today. Looking ahead: It’s really looking like an El Niño will be ongoing this winter. El Niño often has a big factor on the outcome of Michigan’s winter. We may have a strong El Niño, or even a very strong El Niño. In the sky: The Perseid meteor shower, a favorite among summer stargazers, is reaching its spectacular peak this week. Here's some tips to see the most shooting stars. |

Michigan’s 19 most valuable crops in 2022 |
The state’s top money makers : Here is a breakdown of the top 19 crops by last year’s production. Crops are ranked by dollar value for the latest year, and each include dollar value and total yield for each of the last two years. The top three crops were: corn, soybeans and hay. Have you heard of this? Gardeners in Michigan and across the country are reporting a pepper mix up that's been dubbed "jalapenogate" or "peppergate." More in public interest: A second human case of swine flu has been identified in Michigan this summer. |

NASCAR postpones MIS finish as rain returns |
Resuming today: The finish of Sunday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway was postponed after rains soaked the track. Before the race: Jeffrey Earnhardt treated U.S. Army Rangers to breakfast and Byron sent off their hometown hero Erik Jones in style. Familiar faces: Former Detroit Lion Cory Schlesinger was excited for his grand marshal role at the race. Nathan Ricketts and Trevor Apsey were fellow linebackers on CMU’s football team in 2015 and 2016, now they’re on rival NASCAR teams. |

Grand Rapids police K9 seriously injured in hit-and-run crash |
We're thinking of you, Dozer: Grand Rapids police are looking for five people who fled an SUV that violently crashed with a cruiser, seriously injuring a police dog named Dozer. Also in Grand Rapids: Grand Rapids has long been known as a destination for breweries and good beer, but now it’s been recognized three years in a row as the best beer city in the United States. On the east side: This Ann Arbor-area couple wanted a home for the journey, now it’s among the greenest in the world. |
