Already a paczki-eating champ, Michigan teen adds Coney crown to feasting feats |
I'm always been inquisitive of speed eating contest champions. How do they prepare? What's the strategy behind eating so much food? What's the motivation behind it all? For 16-year-old Austin Brooks of Flushing, he's fueled by his second-place finish in the 2022 Flushing Coney Dog Eating Competition to one day win the competition. His determination paid off—he won first place in the Coney Dog Eating Competition at Bueche’s Food World on Tuesday, July 25. The teen said he tried not to eat anything before the 2022 contest. This year – it was all mental preparation. |

Michigan Republican caucuses are outraising Democrats. It may not matter. |
Big money: As Democrats seek to keep control of the legislature in the 2024 election and special interest dollars pivot toward their new majorities, Republicans in the legislature are surpassing them in caucus account fundraising. "Horrific practice": Michigan is joining the growing list of 21 states, plus the District of Columbia, to ban conversion therapy for LGBTQ minors under legislation signed Wednesday, July 26, by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. More in politics: Legislators want a study conducted to assess the security of the Soo Locks and determine how future malfunctions or failures could affect the national supply chain. |

Michigan will accept out-of-state teachers, allow schools to help collect union dues |
Filling the gap: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Wednesday, July 26, aimed at increasing the number of teachers in classrooms throughout Michigan. The laws, among other allowances, will permit Michigan to accept out-of-state teaching certifications and counseling licenses if they meet certain criteria. Unban the ban: Grand Rapids Public Schools rescinded its May backpack ban Monday and students and parents are largely in favor, but still have safety concerns heading into the new school year. More in education: Mott Community College will receive nearly $1.5 million from the U.S. Department of Labor to launch a pre-apprenticeship program in education, occupational skills training and employment for youth. |

Storm leaves more than 125,000 without power across Michigan |
Lights out: A storm with heavy rains and strong winds left more than 125,000 without power and flooded streets in some areas across Southeast Michigan. Wind gusts soared to 67 mph in Romulus, according to reports submitted to the National Weather Service in Detroit. In Muskegon: The heavy rain flooded a portion of Seaway Drive in Muskegon, forced temporary road closures and left some vehicles stranded on Wednesday, July 26. Bird's eye view: Perched 15 stories above the city, a GoPro camera captured a timelapse of a severe thunderstorm that swept through downtown Kalamazoo on Wednesday, July 26. |

West Michigan native makes Women’s World Cup debut |
Center stage: Riley Tanner’s soccer abilities have taken her from West Michigan to South Carolina to Alabama and now Australia and New Zealand for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Stiff competition: Michigan State reports for fall camp in a week and is a little more than a month away from its season opener. Coming off a 5-7 season, there’s a lot of uncertainty for the Spartans, including at the top roster spot. Switching up: If you’re wondering why ticket sales for Thursday’s doubleheader suddenly spiked, it’s because Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin just dropped an important piece of news after Wednesday’s rainout. Two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani, originally scheduled to start Friday in Toronto, will now start Game 1 of Thursday’s doubleheader. |
