| Michigan lands $52M from feds to improve public housing |
Funding: The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded Michigan’s 105 public housing authorities more than $52 million this week to fund the development, financing, modernization and improvements of its housing stock. More housing: More than $1 million federal tax credits was approved for an affordable housing project, bringing 50 new units to Muskegon. The city was among 14 communities statewide to receive federal tax credits for new construction housing projects. In Washtenaw County: A 17-story apartment high-rise outside downtown Ann Arbor is now approved for development despite a fair amount of lingering controversy over it. |

Michigan AG wants to sue the fossil fuel industry over climate change |
Consequences: The burning of fossil fuels is the proven cause of global climate change and Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said she will go to court to make the responsible industry pay for it. From stronger, more frequent storms to crop failures, Nessel says damages from climate-related problems are just the beginning of extra expenses and lost economic opportunities for the state. Also from the attorney general: Michigan’s attorney general announced charges Wednesday against former Adams Township Clerk Stephanie Scott and her attorney, Stefanie Lambert. They supported attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and allegedly accessed voting systems without authorization to find election fraud. "Productivity credits": Under a new new bipartisan bill, some prisoners incarcerated by the Michigan Department of Correction could have a shot at reducing their prison sentence if they actively work and succeed at improving themselves while imprisoned. |

Michigan’s weekend has an ‘Alberta Clipper’ rain system to deal with |
Weekend forecast: This weekend in Michigan will be occasionally on the gloomy side. Rain showers will be common Saturday morning for the U.P. and northwest Lower Michigan before moving south that afternoon. Sunday should be mostly dry throughout the state. Rating: The National Weather Service has finished the damage assessment in St. Joseph County and rated it as an EF2 strength tornado. Video footage and layout of some tree damage confirms this was a multi-vortex tornado during its peak intensity. The NWS has confirmed four tornadoes this week, as of May 9. Ascension health system reports disruptions due to cyberattack |
Cyberattack: A St. Louis-based health system with hospitals across Michigan reported being the victim of a cyberattack this week. Ascension said it detected some unusual activity on its network systems Wednesday, May 8. Since then, it has reported disruptions to its clinical operations and interrupted access to some of its systems. Medical billing: One of Michigan’s largest health insurance agencies, Priority Health, changed the way it reimburses care providers for virtual services known as telehealth, raising concerns about patient care. Also in health: The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) announced Thursday, May 9, it’s using $1.3 million in opioid settlement funds to help five birthing hospitals around the state expand their support for substance-exposed babies and their families. |

Want to work on a Sleeping Bear island this summer? Manitou needs a park ranger |
Now hiring: If you're looking for a seasonal job with a view, look no further than Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The park is looking for a temporary, full-time ranger for the Manitou Islands this summer, officials announced in a Facebook post. Rangers live and work on the islands while earning $18.96 per hour. Check it out: TheHistoric Mill Creek opens for the 2024 season on Friday, May 10 and offers something different on the Straits of Mackinac. The 625-acre site, located three miles east of Mackinaw City, is a living museum and nature park located at the site of a reconstructed 18th-century sawmill. New beginnings: The last remaining traces of a former industrial site near downtown Chelsea are coming down. Contractors have begun demolition at the former Federal Screw Works property in the latest step in the nonprofit Main Street Park Alliance’s plans to transform the site into a public park. |
