A heartwarming, unconventional celebration

There are so many beautiful wedding destinations in Michigan. I immediately think of the dreamy Mackinac Island or sandy Sleeping Bear Dunes. Heck, you can even get married in Hell!

But what about tying the knot at a fast-food joint? One German couple and 23 guests traveled to U.S. to celebrate their wedding at a Michigan McDonald’s.

Newlyweds Mike and Kathi Haller are world travelers and McDonald’s mega fans. After their engagement, they set out to have a the ultimate “United States” wedding day. Mission accomplished.

Michigan is getting its first carpool lanes and more could follow

On the road: State leaders recently passed legislation that would allow the state to designate carpool lanes on newly constructed highways.

Background: Michigan’s first high occupancy lanes have already been built on I-75 between 12 Mile Road and South Boulevard in Oakland County. This year’s “Modernize 75″ construction project included the addition of about 15 miles of carpool lane in each direction, though they needed the recent legislation for the restrictions to go into effect.

More in public interest: These are Michigan’s 25 best high schools according to a new ranking from Niche.

Michigan may fast-track local wind and solar. Is it ‘war’ or essential?

Conflict: As Michigan tries to turn a clean energy future into its present but rural communities push back on wind and solar power, Democrats in the legislature propose a new pathway: give the state some control.

State Senate approved: Bills making core parts of the federal Affordable Care Act – a.k.a. Obamacare – state law in Michigan are headed to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk to be signed.

More in politics: A federal bankruptcy court judge has ordered the Michigan Department of Attorney General to pay certain legal fees incurred by former Gov. Rick Snyder in relation to the Flint water crisis and has found the department in civil contempt.

Dan Campbell isn’t taking Tampa Bay lightly

Lions-Buccaneers preview: As they prepare for this Sunday’s game, the Lions are three-point favorites to beat the NFC South-leading Bucs. Detroit’s recent strong performances make defeating Tampa Bay a reasonable expectation. However, it won’t be easy.

For hockey: Detroit Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said he is all about inclusion following the NHL’s decision to prohibit players from using rainbow-colored tape on their sticks for warmups during Pride nights.

In high school: The Muskegon Heights Public School Academy varsity football program has officially canceled the remainder of its 2023 season.

Michigan’s fall colors are exploding, see where peak color is located

Looking out the window: The wave of peak fall color is moving southeast across Michigan now. We have passed peak color in areas north and west to mostly green areas in the far southeast.

Take a ride: The Southern Michigan Railroad offers fall color train rides in Clinton, Michigan. Take an hour ride down to the mill pond bridge on one of three different train styles. The open gondola features the best views but the closed cabin carts are great for chilly fall days.

Take a trip: There’s something about Michigan’s Tahquamenon Falls that’s extra impressive in autumn. Here are a few ideas for what to do this month in and around Tahquamenon Falls State Park.
