Michigan at 'tipping point' in fight against coronavirus Michigan saw a drop in COVID-19 cases last month. Now, the numbers are ticking upward once again. With the highest number of new daily cases since late May reported this week, experts say the state is at a "tipping point." States like Florida and Arizona that are now seeing huge outbreaks of the virus had similar smaller upticks preceding the spikes. Also worrisome is data from a recent poll of 1,000 Michigan residents that found 48 percent said they were conflicted, confused or casual about COVID-19 health and safety precautions. Michigan hasn't reached second-wave status yet, but is that where we're heading? MORE State to require all medical professionals to undergo implicit bias training Michigan medical professionals will need to undergo implicit bias training in order to be licensed by the state, officials announced during a press conference Thursday. According to the state, 40% of people who have died from the coronavirus in Michigan have been Black, while only 14% of the state's population is made up of Black residents. “The coronavirus pandemic has shown that this inequity is particularly and dangerously true,” said Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II, who revealed 23 people in his life have died due to the virus. MORE Family finds elk skull near Fenton, where elk haven't roamed since 1875 While moving a swim platform, the Bleau family's anchor got stuck. When they pulled it up, they discovered it had hooked the giant antlers of an elk, attached to the animal's skull. They were shocked at their discovery that came from the depths of Sullivan Lake. The real shocker is that elk have not inhabited the area around Fenton since the late 1800s. Michigan's native herd of elk went extinct way back in 1875, though more were brought to the state in the early 1900s to form a herd in the northern Lower Peninsula. MORE Should high school spring and fall sports seasons switch? Football is definitely a contact sport. That means it's not the ideal activity for preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Experts placed contact sports at a 7 on a scale from 1-10 ranking activities in terms of how likely they are to spread the virus. The potential danger associated with football, and indoor sports like volleyball, is one of the reasons the Michigan High School Athletic Association is considering the idea of flipping spring sports and fall sports this year. MORE Masks are an easy, cheap way to limit coronavirus spread Nothing is 100% effective against COVID-19. But when it comes to cheap, easy ways to bring the coronavirus cases down across the country, masks are the key. Though there are arguments among American citizens over the need for masks during the pandemic, the experts are clear about this -- if everyone wore a mask when going in public, the number of cases would drop significantly.
