Michigan income tax rate will return to 4.25% in 2024, state Court of Appeals rules |
Rising back up: The Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled that a reduction in the state income tax rate for the 2023 tax year will not be permanent. The court made the decision on March 7, bringing the reduced tax rate of 4.05% back to its original 4.25%. What to know: This week, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer became the latest in a series of U.S. governors to meet with the Taiwanese president amid a period of particularly heightened tensions between the island and mainland China. Michigan's weekend will actually be wintry, some accumulating snow |
Be prepared: A storm system rolls right across Michigan today and Saturday. The first half of the storm system brings rain today. The second half brings a cold rain that changes to snow over much of Michigan. Help sustain valuable pollinators: The Michigan Beekeepers Association, one of the oldest beekeeping clubs in the country, is encouraging people to plant “trees for bees” this spring. Michigan AG sues dairy farm with heavy pathogen discharge |
The Michigan attorney general’s office is suing an Allegan County dairy farm after escalating scrutiny from environmental regulators found high levels of harmful pathogens in runoff that drains to the Kalamazoo River. An update: A Flushing man accused of stalking Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and her wife was charged Thursday in Wayne County, officials said. Christopher Dean Baldwin, 40, was charged March 7 on two counts of misdemeanor stalking. Accused of being grossly negligent: James Crumbley, father of the Oxford High School shooter who killed four students in 2021, missed an “incredible opportunity” to prevent the tragedy, prosecutors said Thursday as jurors heard opening statements in a trial that will determine whether a second parent will be held responsible for the attack. |

Fewer fish and more algae? Scientists seek to understand impacts of historic lack of Great Lakes ice |
As climate change accelerates, scientists are scrambling to understand how iceless winters could affect the world’s largest freshwater system. Most of the effects are still theoretical since the lakes are generally too treacherous for data-gathering expeditions during the coldest months. But they say the changes could have serious environmental, economic and cultural impacts, including by harming certain fish species, eroding beaches, fueling algae blooms and clogging shipping channels. In the Upper Peninsula: Michigan’s Isle Royale National Park, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Keweenaw National Historical Park are moving away from fossil fuels as part of a first-in-the-nation plan to decarbonize the operations of Lake Superior’s national parks. |
