As of Tuesday, the University of Michigan’s stats were as follows: Zero arrests, one championship win and 21 fires across Ann Arbor. When the clock hit 0:00 and Michigan football officially became national champions, the city sure did celebrate by packing bars and partying in the street.
Moments after winning college football’s top prize, Jim Harbaugh took to a podium and declared his Michigan football team “innocent” of the allegations that rocked the program in 2023. The work wasn't done for Michigan running back Donovan Edwards who met with fans while working the Raising Cane’s drive-thru in Houston the morning after.

Michigan hospitals are getting busier, making for longer wait times. |
Exercising patience: Michiganders seeking care at emergency rooms, urgent care centers and clinics around the state may notice longer wait times this winter due to a recent rise in upper respiratory illnesses. For example: As of Jan. 1, the state health department reported a weekly hospital admissions rate for COVID patients of 14.6 per week per 100,000 people. That rate was 4.8 at the end of October, 10.5 at the end of November, and hadn’t surpassed 14 since February 2022.
More in health care: A senior care facility in Southwest Michigan was cited for violations after an inspector found residents living there were not given their medication as prescribed by their doctors.

Date set for Michigan’s shortest fishing season of 2024 |
The Michigan DNR has set the date for the state’s shortest fishing season. The 2024 lake sturgeon fishing season on Black Lake in Cheboygan County will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3. An annual tradition in Michigan, the unique season typically lasts a couple hours at most. The 2023 season lasted just 65 minutes. A change: Catch limits on steelhead are being reduced on several rivers across Michigan. The new rules, which begin April 1, will reduce the daily limit of steelhead to one on Type 3 and Type 4 waterways. Currently, no more than three fish are allowed in most cases. In weather: It’s a day or two early to be very confident, but you should know there could be another large, wind-driven storm moving into Michigan toward this weekend. |

Defense wants ‘inflammatory’ Michigan school shooting video kept out of mother’s trial |
The latest: As a possible trial approaches, an attorney for Oxford High shooter Ethan Crumbley’s mother, Jennifer Crumbley, is asking a judge to block jurors from seeing video of the Nov. 30, 2021 murders. Quote: “The ... video of the shooting itself is irrelevant to the actions or inactions of Mrs. Crumbley and so overwhelmingly prejudicial (the defense) was shocked when (the prosecution) indicated they might play it,” Jennifer Crumbley’s attorney, Shannon M. Smith, said in a Jan. 8 motion filing. Also in crime: A Michigan couple, the parents of six children, were killed over the weekend in a head-on crash with a stolen pickup truck that was fleeing from state police near Detroit. |

Tigers’ new GM isn’t as visible as last one, but he’s key partner for Scott Harris |
For years, the Detroit Tigers’ general manager was the boss. Now, the GM has a boss. That’s the main reason you haven’t seen or heard as much from Jeff Greenberg during his three-and-a-half-month tenure as the Tigers’ GM, but he’s a key partner for Scott Harris. Tough decisions loom this spring: Spring training doesn’t start for another five weeks. It’s way too early for a roster projection, right? Perhaps. But it appears the Detroit Tigers have already done most of the heavy lifting this summer so we're looking ahead.
Across the street: Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn are both early candidates for the head-coaching job in Washington, with more interest sure to come. Dan Campbell supports it.

At Four Roses Cafe in Plainwell the entrees are tempting but leave room for dessert. Yum: A Bay City staple is back with elevated cocktails and improved Italian steak sandwich.
