I often wonder if I'd be a decent advice columnist. As much as I enjoy reading them, I think I would struggle to take some "issues" readers write in seriously. Can you believe a formal-dress wedding will offer hay bales as seats? Gasp.

Someone who I believe gives great advice is Ruth Bratton of Richfield Township. The recently turned 100-year-old shared with us how to live a long and happy life: "Just be kind."

Well Ruth, the universe will be very kind to whoever wins this $1.725 billion jackpot Powerball.

The United Auto Workers strike mounts a record high $5.5B in losses. Approximately 4,800 workers have been laid off by the Big Three since the start of the strike.

Michigan doesn’t have enough teachers. It could get worse.

Know for sure: As administrators report teacher applications for positions coming in at half the rate they were prior to the pandemic, it’s no longer a question of whether Michigan is facing an educator shortage but where those shortages are and how badly it’s impacting students.

An effort to improve: Retired teachers and public school employees can return to classrooms and coaching positions while still keeping their retirement benefits under a new law signed into effect.

In postsecondary education: More students will be eligible for free tuition at Michigan State University through an expanded scholarship program.

$20M ad campaign could grow Michigan’s population – at least that’s the goal

TV, radio, print and social media: Michigan leaders hope a new $20 million national campaign will boost the state’s stagnating population, attract job seekers to Michigan and ward off economic trouble.

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corp. unveiled “You Can in Michigan” Tuesday, Oct. 10, saying it’s the largest talent attraction campaign in the United States.

More from Lansing: Homeowners associations could be prohibited from blocking a litany of energy efficiency upgrades – from rooftop solar panels and home EV charging to clotheslines and rain barrels – under a new proposed bill in the Michigan House.

15-year-old suspect arrested in connection with death of Democratic official from Lansing

The latest for crime: A 15-year-old suspect is in custody in connection with the death of 63-year-old Theodore “Ted” Lawson who was shot and killed while canvassing Sunday afternoon. Lawson served as the secretary for the Ingham County Democratic Party.

In Kalamazoo: Police negotiators talked a man off a ledge in downtown Kalamazoo on Tuesday morning. He was taken into custody to get mental health help, the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety reports.

An Upper Peninsula sheriff is publicly commending his deputies for their actions during a difficult “suicide by cop” situation on Sugar Island.

Good news! Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown expected to play in Tampa

Back on the field: Detroit (4-1) is headed to Tampa for a first-place showdown against the NFC South-leading Buccaneers (3-1). Star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is expected to return to action this week.

A few farewells: Former Lions captain and starting linebacker Devon Kennard announced his retirement and beloved ESPN hockey analyst Barry Melrose is retiring after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

For basketball: There's no timetable for Michigan coach Juwan Howard to return after heart surgery and the new Michigan State basketball coach has a plan to bolster program.
