Michigan cut off unemployment for thousands of eligible residents. It isn't the first time. Unemployment claims flooded Michigan's system after the coronavirus pandemic caused widespread layoffs and furloughs. First, applicants had trouble even filing a claim using the overloaded online system. Now, eligible residents are having trouble receiving payments due to measures put into place to combat unemployment insurance fraud. Plus, despite increased staffing at the Unemployment Insurance Agency, workers simply can't keep up with all the calls from residents trying to get their payments. The extent of the current issues at the UIA may be unprecedented, but the problems themselves are nothing new, experts say.
