Large Michigan school districts will not be re-opening this fall First Lansing, now Ann Arbor. Some of Michigan's largest school districts have announced that they will not be re-opening their buildings this fall for in-person learning due to ongoing safety concerns related to COVID-19. Announcements from Michigan cities like Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo are expected soon. Ann Arbor's announcement came with some early details as to what virtual learning will entail. AAPS plans to provide all students with devices such as an iPad or Chromebook to participate in the virtual courses and help with internet service as needed. Equipment and access to internet will be a major challenge for schools that go fully online. The pandemic has highlighted how important schools are, particularly for students in poverty, and risks of being at home longterm include food insecurity, abuse and neglect, isolation, mental health issues, reduced physical activity and dropping out of school.
