One good deed deserves another. |
Usually on Fridays, I have been sharing weekend events here. But I couldn't pass up the opportunity to instead share this short but heartening story about Diana Gordon, a Michigan woman who found nearly $15,000 in a bag while walking to work. Even though Gordon admits she could use some financial help, she didn't even think about keeping the pile of cash. She immediately returned it to police, who found the rightful owners (a set of newlyweds). In return, those who heard Gordon's story started a fund to reward her with thousands of dollars to hopefully secure her a vehicle and end those walks to the office. OK, now that I've shared that, I'll sneak in some event roundups. Here are things to this weekend in Grand Rapids, Ann Arbor and Flint. |

Is winter toast? Let's evaluate what a meteorologist and some critters have to say. |
Are the next 24 hours the end of real winter? Wow, it's cold out there. But, according to MLive Chief Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa, the bitter cold should start to disappear after tomorrow morning. Then we are heading into a period of above-average temperatures. But don't get too excited just yet. That really just means 35-45 degrees. It won't be time for sandals.
Woody says spring is here: Woody the Woodchuck made her prediction for the season during the Howell Nature Center’s 25th annual Groundhog Day Celebration on Thursday. Despite clear skies and sunshine, Woody wasn’t scared by her shadow back into her den, meaning she didn’t see her shadow and spring will come early. Phil says winter will stay: Punxsutawney Phil, the celebrated star of Groundhog Day, did indeed see his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter. |

Looking for some tax relief? Your blood could hold the answer. |
Donations of it, that is: Under pending legislation from Rep. Rachel Hood, D-Grand Rapids, Michiganders could get a $25 tax credit per single blood, platelet or plasma donation to a non-profit entity within a fiscal year.
How much could you claim? A person could theoretically donate whole blood a total of six times in a year, meaning Michiganders could possibly see $150 back on their taxes for the effort. Platelet donations can occur 24 times a year, possibly totaling $600 in returns under the bill and plasma could be donated a maximum of 13 times a year, meaning a possible $325 in returns. Also involving the legislature: A Michigan lawmaker and the family of a boy who was allegedly beaten to death by his parents are speaking out about the system they believed failed him. |

How did 3 Detroit Lions help a Michigan man win $1 million? Here's how. |
A big win: With the help of three Detroit Lions players, Livonia native Mike Petta, who now lives in Novi, recently won big on DraftKings to the tune of $1,022,667 to be exact. But how exactly did it happen? Petta’s $1 million win came during week 4 of the NFL season when the Lions played the Seattle Seahawks. His nine-player lineup had three Detroit Lions in it, with running back Jamaal Williams, wide receiver Josh Reynolds and tight end T.J. Hockenson. But if you want to know all the details, you'll have to read the full story.
More Lions news:The Detroit Lions have added yet another former player to their unique coaching staff. And this time, it’s a very familiar face. Dre’ Bly has been hired as the club’s next cornerbacks coach, effectively replacing Aubrey Pleasant. |
