Charges against prison staff for Michigan inmate’s death is ‘just the beginning’, sister says

Long road ahead: Now that charges have been brought against eight Michigan prison staffers for their alleged roles in the death of inmate Jonathan Lancaster, his sister says this is “just the beginning” of “another long-haul battle.”

Seeking justice: The second of three legislative efforts to fight sexual abuse in Michigan is headed to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s desk after passing the House with wide bipartisan support. The nine bills that passed Wednesday crack down on abusers, protect patient privacy and more.

The state Supreme Court has agreed to consider the legality of the “adopt and amend” strategy used by Republicans in the state legislature to dilute ballot initiatives that would have significantly raised the minimum wage and required every business in the state to provide paid sick leave to their employees.

New heights: After years of planning and construction, the 65-foot-high Reach for the Sky Canopy Walk opened to the public on June 20. The structure includes a suspending bridge and an outdoor classroom for yoga and educational courses, Hidden Lake Gardens Marketing and Publicity Coordinator Jessica Goodrich said.

While you're outdoors: The largest campground at a state park on the shore of Lake Michigan will reopen this weekend, one week ahead of schedule. Ludington State Park’s Beechwood Campground was closed for construction as the Michigan camping season began.

Lake effect: Michigan is panting under a drought as summer arrives. Wildfires elsewhere are making their presence known.
