How to see Michigan's only native hummingbird |
The weather is warming, flower bulbs are starting to bloom and migratory birds are making their way back North from a winter getaway. Michigan's only native hummingbird, the ruby-throated hummingbird, has already started its return to the region. Follow along with the birds' travel with the help of the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Journey North website, which uses citizen-reported observations to share maps and updates tracking North American migratory species. If it seems like you're reaching for antihistamines or a box of tissues a little more frequently this spring, there's a reason for that. An uptick in seasonal allergies is among the first wave of anticipated health impacts from climate change, CNN reports. |

How Michigan’s immigrant rent subsidy became a focus of conservative outrage |
Election year politics surrounding illegal immigration and Michigan’s “newcomer rent subsidy” program has sparked a firestorm of outrage in conservative media, linking Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s administration to the influx of migrants at the southern border. What's going on: Right-wing outlets like Brietbart are inaccurately citing MLive's previous coverage of the subsidy by stating Michigan is giving hundreds of dollars to immigrants who are in the state illegally. But undocumented immigrants who can’t legally reside in the U.S. are not eligible to get the subsidy, and the state never asked Michiganders to set up new arrivals in their own homes. Under development: Kalamazoo County leaders have approved more than $4 million to create more housing with the latest round of millage grants for 2024, funding developments and other projects. |

His family was fleeing war in Gaza. The same night, he was killed in Kalamazoo. |
In Kalamazoo: Mohamed Farwana was expecting a call from relatives in Palestine as they fled their home in Gaza on March 23 to escape war. But he received an unexpected call from Kalamazoo's Bronson Hospital. His 25-year-old son, Bader Farwana, was a victim of a shooting. The killing comes on the heels of a record high number homicides last year in Kalamazoo, compared to the past two decades. Previous assaults: Months prior to being arrested in connection with the shooting death of his father, Timothy John Kildee -- the nephew of U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee -- was charged in Oakland County with the physical and sexual assaults of two hospital employees. Sentencing: Prosecutors in Michigan are recommending at least 10 years in prison next week for Jennifer and James Crumbley, who are the first in the U.S. to be held criminally responsible for a school shooting. |

Michigan's weekend weather gradually climbs out of a winter feel |
Weekend forecast: This week's storm system is moving off the East coast, bringing sunshine and warmer temperatures to Michigan. Weekend temperatures will be about average for early April. Early morning temperatures will start in the 20s and will rise into the 50s by the afternoon. Mixed bag: From slightly warmer spring days to heavy snowstorms, Michigan's April weather can be unpredictable. A typical weather pattern is a warming, sunny day leading to severe thunderstorms. This year the first two weeks of April look like we will have more pleasant weather than winter storminess or severe thunderstorms. Be careful: If you’re planning to catch a glimpse of the upcoming solar eclipse on April 8, make sure you use caution to prevent potentially lifelong injury. Here's how you can view the solar eclipse without permanent eye damage. |

A remote travel destination very popular among Michiganders may surprise you |
Across the border: Canada’s most visited national park, Banff, has been named the most popular travel destination among Michigan residents by travel info site, Places to Travel. With the picturesque Canadian Rockies in the distance, this spot is known for its pristine wilderness surroundings. Speaking of traveling: If you have travel plans this week, pack your patience. The Federal Aviation Administration is alerting travelers to expect delays in the days ahead as people venture across the country for spring break and to watch the solar eclipse on April 8. Making changes: Frequent flight cancellations will result in a new airline taking over passenger service at the Muskegon County Airport that officials hope will restore public confidence. |
