GOP, progressive Dems join to halt Michigan financial disclosure bills amid criticism of loopholes |
What's happening:Amid growing criticism, legislation detailing what state politicians must show the public in new personal financial disclosures has been halted in the Michigan House after it became unclear whether the bills have the votes to pass. Details: The Senate had passed nearly identical legislation 36-2 Wednesday, despite complaints from some legislators. But in the House, both Republicans and progressive Democrats – who had their own proposal sidelined last week – were openly opposed to the bills, citing loopholes that would make it easy for politicians to hide financial information. Also in politics: Because they could not secure sufficient Democratic votes on a more sweeping package, state representatives passed an altered version of the Reproductive Health Act. |

Man sentenced for touching young girls in Michigan’s Adventure wave pool |
In the Muskegon County Courthouse: At the request of the victims in a criminal case, a 39-year-old man avoided time in prison for inappropriately touching two young girls at Michigan’s Adventure. An update: A Michigan man has been sentenced to 45-70 years for the triple murder of his family while he was out on bond in a torture case. More in crime: Almost everyone accused of participating in the fatal shooting of a man who was broadcasting his beef with his soon-to be killers live on Facebook have been sentenced. |

Big Ten coaches want Michigan punished for sign-stealing, according to report |
Want something done: Big Ten coaches have expressed frustration over the ongoing sign-stealing investigation at Michigan and encouraged league commissioner Tony Petitti to act, according to a new report from ESPN detailing a coaches call held Wednesday. What’s open on Mackinac Island this winter: Popular restaurants, cozy inns, pizza shop |
Winter wonderland: November marks the end of the busy tourist season on Mackinac Island, but that doesn’t mean this charming spot is closed to visitors. There is a winter ferry to and from the mainland, airplanes still fly in and out of the island’s small airport, horse-drawn taxis are still available, and a handful of popular places will remain open for the season.
Book a stay: A weekend of “unique holiday experiences” is on tap at popular Ludington bed and breakfasts next month. From 1 year to 6 months: The booking window for cabins, yurts, tiny houses, lodges and other overnight accommodations at Michigan’s state parks is now shrinking to six months, officials announced. |
